Any ideas how to build a cheap version without cardboard

You could make a chair. It would be both cheaper and less retarded.

Great idea if you're low on space, awful idea if you just want to be a hipster.
1. Very uncomfortable
2. Chair/recliner can do a better job and allow more book space
3. It will probably be seen as cheesy in 2-3 years and your intended effect will have worn off.
Easiest, and cheapest way to do it is with shitty, non-furniture grade plywood since it's low load bearing. As for the chair thing it looks pre-fabricated and the bookshelf is cut around it. If not then you can try a sheet/plate of plastic molded in the shape then attach a cushion in that shape to the plastic.
Long story short though you're probably not going to impress any girls, Asian or not, with your cuck shed-lite book shelf.

It's a little autistic, but I get the idea of having a little tight space to curl up into. IDK if it's an asperger's thing but it makes me comfortable.
You should just make some kind of capsule with a chaise lounge in it, and store your books under the chaise. Then do one of those things where you use an LCD panel to make a light that looks like a window with light coming through it on a sunny day.
>it's this autist from /g/
>I'm tiered of being comfortable when I study or read
> I know I'll build a shitty, stuffy, confining box I can crawl into and be miserable
