How do you organize your tools and parts?

So does anyone have any tricks or suggestions for staying organized?

I'm in a apartment so space is a premium and throwing stuff in plastic boxes becomes a mess and makes finding stuff hard.

The best trick I found so far is to use a filing cabinet and putting small things in files so it's easy to find.

I mostly do electronics so it's all small things. Those parts bins are good but you can only have so many in a apartment.

i use an old six-pack box and a pair of milk crates. 0/10 would not recommend living like me

those stackable containers with that angled opening like in your op image there are the gold standard for small parts storage and sorting. you can also get a cubby unit, or even just shelving with dividers.

Magnets and a big metal thing are a good way to organize all your component bags.
>>
>>1213948

Absolutely disgusting.
>>
I have an organiser like pic related and all the hardware stored in it rusted. My shop doesnt seem to have any damp problems, it's just the stuff in these bins. Any idea what might cause that?
>>
>>1213896
Use ziplocks. Label with tape on the top. Use them like the file folders. Dont need a cabinet, boxes work. I like to cut down cardboard boxes and reenforce with colored D tape for quick reference.
Bonus hang a small line of clothes pins above your work area. Hang the bitbags your using off the workspace but still in eye sight.

Maybe the wind that carry humidity or sea breeze

Personally, I put the bitbags into ziploc bags into plastic shoe storage boxes.

>>1213963
Lock-and-lock food storage bins might be just the ticket, especially if you stop eating the silica gel sachets and put them in the boxes instead.

>hang a small line of clothes pins above your work area
Jeenyus like this is why I come here. I think I'm going to do that but with binder clips.

>makes finding stuff hard.

this is a life hacker tip. make one file. either in a loose leaf notebook or a flash drive or cloud or wherever.

make multiple copies of that file, so that no matter what burns up you will have that file.

now make that file comprehensible. That is the hard part.

"I stored the mechanical choke bullshit parts for my old carb in box A12 in the shed out back".

Make the notes comprehensible. Make the notes indestructible. If your phone dies the same week that your PC melts down you want this file to be easily readable.

This is the file that tells you how to re-install your OS and where you put that pile of screws you removed from that piece of shit that you never intended to re-assemble.

tawnee taught me all this stuff. but I did not listen, because she was wearing that.

which means searchable.

as much as vim sucks, and it really sucks, it has the best search ever.

ok, enough about vim. be able to find what you are looking for.

I do this: if I want to be able to find the shit about my asus laptop, I file the important shit under "asus asus", because searching for asus alone can turn up 40 hits. but "asus asus" leads to the important stuff, if i'm lucky and I was smart.

that's the hard part. having your 5 year ago self being able to think like your today self. I'm still learning that part.

Friend down the street was moving out, got an old card box for free.

pic is related

Solid oak drawers with dovetails, sturdy cast stainless handles.
Just had to buy some pan screws, fix some of the water damage and remove the fugly paint job.

Highly reccomend.

For larger stuff like powertools, just milk crates stacked on a shelf, as well as a few tool boxes.
>>
>>1215660
On the downside, every hipster wants a card catalog so they cost a retarded amount of money.

Extremely lucky that someone didn't know the value of those things. A 60-drawer card cabinet is absolute minimum $1000. I was at an estate sale last week where a 72-drawer was listed at $2000

PARTS and stuff:
i slowly get similiar containers like the ones in your picture i mostly get severals fill them up and then get another ones(they have them in diferent sizes from small ones like in my pictures to big one you can fit a motor in), things i need to move ofthen or too small i have in suitcases style boxes i decided to go with one style/firm so i dont end up with ton of diferent cases they are pain in the ass to store
for cold storage i have old file boxes and now i ading folding containers for light stuff, also reusing boxes from other things, just clean them up and they are ideal for small stuff u need in cold storage
also you can ked inspiration from Adam Savage or the other Mythbuster i got ton of inspiration from them or people foloving them(like pipe tape storage, soda can as container for used blades and pointy stuff etc.)

Is that just because they're so labour-intense, I wonder? Because they can be built -- but I guess nobody is interested in doing it anymore?
