Hello wood workers of /diy/. I was given free logs recently and wanted to use pic related to make a small piece of furniture. Would be able to get rid of the rot in the center or is it a lost cause? I'm fairly new to woodworking so any advice would be useful.

Different view if it helps.

You can use the wood for woodworking. Maybe try using the rotted hole as a 2$ hooker fleshlight simulator

Cut into 2x4s.
Build chair out of said 2x4s.
Profit
>>
>>1208454
you might remove the rot and fill it back with softer wood
>>
>>1208483
I mean it is great if you have the same density wood with perfect fit just glue it
other wise you need to hammer in glued small pieces to fill the gaps
>>
Thank you for the advice. It would jave been a bummer if i had to scrap the whole thing.
>>
>>1208454
Just cut around it and salvage the best parts.

Make sure you cut off the bark and the sapwood - the sapwood is where bugs and beetles will be.

You can always fill cracks and flaws with resin to reinforce them, or showcase the salvaged wood look.

Word? Thanks I'm about to do this as well.

Resin and vacuum chamber.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IfS9KgsKZmI

Remember, for small stuff all you need is a mason canning jar and one of those canning jar attachments for a food vacuum sealer.
>>
>>1208715
Damn. I didn't even know this existed. But I dont see it feasible money wise and in regards to space to be able to do something like that for the size of the log I got
>>
>>1208876
You cut the log up into smaller pieces "blanks" then stabilize those.
>>
>>1208876
You can also turn any air tight solid container into a vacuum chamber. You don't need to pull a very hard vacuum. You can repeat the process several times to get the air out, using a lower vacuum. I use a car break bleeder hand vacuum. With a mason jar I can pull 23inHg, but in larger containers I don't get near that amount before the container starts to deform. So, I pump it out until it is just before the container starts to deform.
>>
>>1208893
That would be a more cost effective route to take for the meantime it seems. At first I didn't think the vacuum was an actual part of it but looking more into it, it makes me feel more like an idiot for assuming that it wasn't needed
>>
>>1208952
You basically suck the air out of the wood and when you release the pressure, the resin it is sitting in will get sucked into the log. Just repeat until there's no foam coming out of the wood. You could probably use a 5-gallon bucket with a good sealing lid for low inHg.

Light that shit on fire and roast some sausages over it. Enjoy a few beers as the fire burns down. Best use for it, really...

Go to a lumberyard for your furniture project, you fucking moron.
