Hey guys, I bought a killer fridge but it's too hot outside. The manufacturer specifications say it's good in ambient temperatures up to 90 degrees, but I'm in Utah and it's in the 90s and 100s for the weather and inside my car is of course much hotter out in the sun. The fridge works great when it's not the hottest part of the day, but when it's 90+ the thing just shits out and keeps turning itself off to stop sucking power from my 12v outlet despite the fridge being set on low battery protection mode. Obviously this isn't working for things which need to remain cool and the temperature reading shows 60s-70s inside the fridge because it stopped cooling with the oven-like temperatures of a sun-baked suburban.
I've read about people insulating fridges like this with different materials but my local Lowe's only seemed to have one type of polystyrene insulation in the isle and I'm not sure that's the best tuff to use and if I use it will it even work. I have the one inch thickness but am thinking about returning it and buying two inch thickness before I cut it and surround all four sides, top, and bottom with this stuff which just looks like styrofoam with a shiny, aluminum side.

>tl;dr
Anybody have experience insulating a 12v fridge for camping and sleeping in your car in hotter weather?

Get a suitable cord. And run It outside your car in the shade.
>>
>>1206631
I can't do that if I'm living in it too.
>>
What's keeping you in Utah?
>>
>>1206647
not op, but it's actually really nice here
we're surrounded by the most beautiful places on the planet, while of mormons seems to keep the riffraff and problems plaguing other places away

>>1206626
i've been very impressed by how effective space blankets are
they can be used to keep heat out just as well as in
i had a frozen 40 pack of waters wrapped in one left in my car in the blazing heat
a week later the ones in the middle were still frozen solid (i think the outer ones only really melted because of conduction touching the space blanket - next time i'll try wrapping them in a towel or something first)

also consider that the fridge itself by virtue of how it works is contributing (significantly i'd imagine) to the heat in the car

do they make 12v car window swamp coolers?
>>
>>1206676
fear* of mormons
>>
Leave some ice in it so it stays cold during the hot parts of the day

Do Somalis keep shitters out of Minnesota?
>>
>>1206647
I dunno. I was born here. Why leave? It's good enough with extra money to travel when I want.
Most places are shit holes anyway. I've been around other states and countries and there's always something to complain about anywhere.
Non Utahns jelly. Stay butthurt.
>>1206676
I've heard about spaces blankets. I'm thinking about trying out the polystyrene board and if that isn't enough I can add something like a space blanket in addition. If that doesn't work then fuck it I'll figure something else out like a dual battery setup for the fridge and let it run as desired.

I have one of those, never actually use it. It's cooled by those odd plate things that get super fucking hot on one side. If it doesn't have a fan on it, put one on. If it does, make a vent to outside like the one that already exists in the back left or right quarter panel for your A/C.
>>
Concentrate on keeping your car cooler.. spray bomb it light white.. less heat absorbtion.. get a bunch of chip bags.. clean them off and cut them open, tape them together and then when parked put them shiny side out on the windows to prevent your car from building up so much heat.... run cooler to its absolute coldest during the night.. perhaps then consider putting it into a larger cooler during the hot part of the day.. don't open it during the hot hours if you can avoid it.. make sure the lid seals well and you aren't leaking air.. if you at then lubricate seals with vasoline and consider sealing outside with duct tape... if it gets cold enough to freeze anything the. Try and freeze some bottled water during the night to help keep it cold through the day...
>>
>>1206626
Put this one inside of a bigger one. The bigger one will shit out, but keep it's inside 60s-70s and the smaller one will keep chugging along because of the low ambient temp.
>>
>>1206637
How and why are you living in that fridge
>>
>>1206801
get solar lights, hook them up in series and parallel to get 5volts, do this 4 times for all your windows. Get 1 dollar usb fans at walmart, make cardboard/plastic cases that fit into the top of your window wells and seal up the windows otherwise(make that part WHITE or BLACK or SILVER to match your car), now your vehicle is being vented in that heat.

Get those cheap tinfoil looking window covers, cut and reinforce them to cover all your windows, glue/tape magnets onto them so they stick to the windows metal for easy on/off.

Get cheap metal vent tubing for dryers from a Menard's or somewhere, tape to the exhausts of that fridge and have it point out on of your window openings, use the usb fan trick to vent it out.

I'm assuming you have a cheap 12 volt solar charger to keep from having to burn fuel to prevent dead battery syndrome on your vehicle or burning lots of gas.

>>1206626
those things use awful peltier coolers, the cooler you keep the hot side, the better. put as large a heatsink as you can find on the outer plate with as powerful fan as you can stand to hear
>>
I dont think its the insulation but im not a HVAC.

A fridge is basically a heat exchanger that uses a gas to be super efficient, a bit like sweating, the sweat moves the heat fast providing you have an airflow.

If you have no air and a high heat, sweating is useless.

So perhaps you just need to provide some airflow through the vehicle when you are not there and block out some of the heat with either tinting or sun screens.

If there is so much sun, perhaps you can DIY a photo-voltaic and 12v PC fans setup to move fresh air around your car, it might still be hot air, but at least it is moving.

ARB makes high end shit, that cooler was probably a thousand dollars.
It should make popsicles in death valley.

OP your shit is not working right , call customer support.

>It should make popsicles in death valley.
>OP your shit is not working right , call customer support.

OP said the documentation said it was good to 90 degrees and that his temperature could be up to 100. I know they build margin, but I wouldn't say his product is defective no matter what it cost.
>>
>>1207071
Unless ARB makes a cheap heat exchange cooler that I dont know about, that thing should work in a hot car.
I am not kidding about popsicles in death valley.
Guys on a forum I frequent about offroading and overlanding have posted pics of exactly that.
Way over 90
>>
OP what happens when you idle the vehicle when its super hot?
Does the battery saver still kick in?
>>
>>1206626

Insulation will only help if it's a temperature cut out on the compressor turning it off after it overheats from running too long at high ambient temperatures.

If it senses ambient temperature and simply says "fuck it" when it becomes too high, insulation will not help.
>>
>>1207095
theres no way this thing has a compressor
>>
>>1207111

Way.
>>
>>1206626
Put your car in a shipping container.
>>
>>1207111

ARBs absolutely have compressors. Thats why they cost so much more than a thermo electric cooler
>>
>>1206626
great unit but very pricey. Might be defective OP, while 90+ would push it, it should still remain frozen. Cover it in mylar. Put a sheet of foam on the top and the bottom. Check to see where the coils are. Sometimes they put them wrapped around under the skin so you can't insulate the walls. Not sure about arb. I'd give my left nut for a decent cost affordable 12 volt refrigeration solution. Best I've seen is a conversion kit for 670 bucks to make an upright fridge and a 300 dollar max burton cooler. Probably the lowest price I have seen aside from the sub cubic foot dometic models.
