I was at a party the other night and through drinking and conversation I ended up in a group telling jokes. It was then that I realized that I couldn't recall many jokes on command, and that the ones I could recall weren't for mixed company. At that moment I thought to myself - "It would have been beneficial to have some rehearsed jokes for situations such as this."
What are some other small skills that require a little effort but great benefit when the opportunity presents itself?

it is always good to have 1 or 2 *good* jokes that you can tell. As long as you have enough self-awareness to realize if you are being a cringemaster like anon said.

also good communication skills in general are invaluable
