So I bought this from lowes to replace an old one, installed it, and wired it.
I have little experience doing any of this and my attic is full of some sort of old cellulose / wood insulation.
When I finished and turned the light on it threw the breaker.
I'm not sure what I did wrong.
Suggestions?
and what happened when you went back and checked all the connections....

Couldn't find anything wrong.
The old light worked but the fan was out.

You are really not giving us enough information to help you. Try taking some photos of the wires, the connections, etc and posting them. There are probably 99 things that could be wrong and the insulation in the attic isn't one of them.

You either wired it incorrectly or damaged a wire.
