I have a question.
Are all telescopic poles for paint rollers universal, or do certain brands use some kind of proprietary connection?

All the ones I've ever seen were universal.
They're all the same.
Also works on squeegees and window cleaning tools.

True, but they occasionally try to come up with an improvement, like Shure-loc, which is compatible with the old screw threads, but allows you to quickly switch poles or use no pole at all.
The old tried-and-true works best in my opinion, and I've been painting for 22 years.
Roller poles are like lots of tools: if you buy cheap crap, you wind up with cheap crap. If you're going to paint more than a few rooms, get decent poles.
There are gotchas though. One brand has a little lever that you press to adjust the length. The problem is that it's too easy to accidentally touch it. I was rolling over a window where my boss decided to save 10 minutes and leave the blinds up, and I tapped the lever and my 4 foot pole changed into a 2 foot pole and painted the blinds on the way down.

I use an old broom handle, stuck into the hollow of the handle and hold it together with masking tape or duct tape. Works every time.
