I want to get into stonecutting, is there anything I should know?
its a secret
It's a shit trade. If you want to work with stone be a bricklayer or do some shit with concrete.
It's a great secondary skill. You need to know how to lay brick or tile or concrete first, and then you can pick up stone jobs as a bonus.
Hardly anyone STARTS with the notion to install fieldstone/flagstone/etc... it's always like "yeah, we can stretch the budget by like 6 grand to make it look good instead of generic."
Unless you can market to new builders that want custom pool features, stonecutting is kindof a sideline.
OTOH, if you think you want to be "that stone guy" for doing natural facade work and fireplaces inside log cabins and shit, and are willing to follow the work, do what pleases you my dude.
You should know the types of stone natural to your business base. Limestone granite basalt marble quartz soapstone, etc.... maybe start at a custom cabinet place as a countertop specialist?
Most expert stonecutters learned from cutting local stone for local builds. A dying trade.
