Hello /diy/,
I'm about to painting my newly bought used and abused desk. Gotta wait for tomorrow because sun is basically setting right now.
But for right now, sand paper and drilling can be done
I swear english is my first language.
So while sanding down the desk, I've uncovered marks where the sun and the desk do not meet. Remnants of what the previous owner has used this before.
Like his monitor stand.

It looks like particle board with some paper veneer. I've gotten better desks off the free section of CL and you paid money for that? And now you are going to waste more money painting it? Why? The paint is just going to wear off in a few months anyway.
>>1196409
Tt basically is...
I didn't know what I was going into desu. Just looked at craigslist dealings and went for it with "why not" in mind.
What's done is done and I've got supplies for it. So, why not?
it also came with a chair...
Looked on home depot for 3/4" particle board.
I thought wood was cheap.
Took off the keyboard tray since the table top is designated to hold everything for me.
Brought things outside and started to drill small holes to mount screws later.
Mounted a big ass screw into one of the tiny holes and,
fuck.
So I've decided to check on the quality of my paint soon later and,
fuck again.
Does this usually happen to paint, where rust happens?
you better use primer
>>1196501
tyty it's specialty "latte" art ;^)
I q-tipped the paint and it's still good and I've also read ( http://www.curbly.com/8250-how-to-salvage-the-contents-of-a-rusty-paint-can ) to strain the paint into a new can.
This paint was used for my rooms' walls. So a table to blend into my room! Or should it be darker...
>>1196503
Noted, as I've been reading ENOUGH to prime, paint and finish. Me so smart.
I've realized the paint I'm using is an acrylic paint for this project... Easily dries quickly and easy to make some unnatural bumps in the final version.
There is this nice contrast between the wall and this ikea shelf. Wondering if I should add a darker shade of green to the paint to match my desktop...
and the desktop in question...
Alright the plan now is to continue to hand sand the tabletop and maybe the legs as well, tomorrow.
Then proceed to assemble where the dog will not kill himself with the primer.
Dog in question...
>>1196417
dat stain in the middle
last person probably busted a nut on that chair
>>1196825
I won't deny that. Nothing a little soap and water can't fix.
If worse comes to worse I'll look up how to clean the fabric of the chair.
Alright, I think I've sanded the desk tables far enough.
Wiped it down with a wet paper towel to remove paper veneer and particle board grit (soon to be a wet rag because paper towel fragments kept getting stuck on the sand paper side of the table)
resanded the corners and edges of the table because burrs.
>>1196493
>>1196496
FUCK again.
What happened here was that I drilled a bigger hole than previously and used the SAME screw and borked the side of the table legs. Not that bad compared to previously.
I don't learn. I do have better screws now, so hopefully it doesn't happen again.

I've went to the hardware store and I've asked the clerk everything he knows about painting.
So I've bought myself a paint strainer and hope it salvages my paint.
Found myself a bucket and ready to work. But the strainer is too small for the bucket...
I scrambled for supplies to hold this thing together and what I ended up with was chopsticks and a banded tie.
Sketchy...
The setup for salvage...
>>1196405
For the amount of time, effort, and money that you are putting into restoring this bullshit particle board desk, you could have gone to Office Depot/Max, and bought a brand new bullshit particle board desk.
Learn to wood.
>>1196899
I've heard of it but never put it in practice before.
I've also got a ton of chinese newspaper laying around.
>>1196910
I've deep cleaned my room for this piece and it's the only thing between me and playing games. I want to make this as good as possible with the knowledge I know now and learn later. The thrill of learning!
Also corner desks are expensive... My total spending so far has been around $80.
https://www.target.com/p/wrap-computer-desk-tms/-/A-16619752 could have totally spent money on this. Then again, time is all I have right now.
and the salvage starts.
Don't mind the paint covered chopsticks everything is fine.
The supplies for priming.
First time.
The newspaper setup. Not the greatest of coverage but it SHOULD work if I don't fling paint like an idiot.
Top coverage finished. I was wondering how I was going to tackle the sides of this thing with the brush I have.
Both table tops done. Gonna check up on the paint salvage.
Finished!
I've done what I could and I should have enough paint to finish what I started. There was still a rust lump in the original can. Did not dare to mess with it.
Going to have to find a way to salvage these chopsticks. Or just simply throw them away.
I've brought the table legs with pre-drilled holes next to my room door for convenience later on. Good thing the scuffs and scratches won't be visible unless you crawl and look carefully enough.
Or I could just paint the legs as well. Not worth it in my opinion. The color of the black legs shouldn't collide with the color of the wall that much... Hoping.
I've also painted on the keyboard tray I'm not going to use and tested out the sealant. It came out with what I expected.
Sealant says to wait an hour but I feel I should leave it out for a day to make sure it is the texture I want.
Table tops are done drying for another coat of primer. I'm thinking two coats should be enough.
I've sanded the tables again.
and... It's night time!
I've still not put on the second coat. I've prepped the tables with a damp rag and now it's time to paint!
>>1197012
forgot pic
I've primed with the best of my abilities. There are still little dimples in the table and the butt of the computer >>1196408 mark is still there.
But as long as the paint covers well I should be okay.
>>1197015
I did it again.
Supplies set aside for another day.
Time to ask the nice clerk again for how to paint consistently so that my coat of paint does not have valleys from the brush.
How to get the perfect spray on paint without the spray and with my current materials is my quest now.
>>1197019
Thin the paint so that it flows well.
After applying the paint, finish with one light pass over the whole surface using a dry brush.
The aim of ths is to get the paint oriented in one direction, and take off any extra paint.
If the finish isn't perfect, flat it down with 800 grit paper, then polish with automotive buffing compound.
Alright it's afternoon again. Big fuck ups happening.
Tables are sanded and wiped.
Hmm... Paint seems a little on the chunky side. So I've mixed and it was pretty resistant...
That should be no problem though.
OH NO ABORT ABORT.
I thought something chunky would've translated to smooth on the boards.
The table is saved, but I'm not sure about the paint.
The paint dried while it was going through the strainier.
Throw it away and get some oil based alkyd enamel.
I tried to thin the paint with water and started mixing with the chopsticks. Yeup did not turn out so well.
I guess I'll hold this project until later because the paint store is closed. Or I could head down to a home depot now and find out how to save or just buy another paint altogether...
>>1197415
Hmm... I already put on a water based primer, would it be okay for me to mix oil and water?
I'm currently building a desk of my own and cannot decide whether to use a darker stain or a lighter stain. Thoughts or suggestions on the matter? Any tips would be appreciated as well.
>>1197461
Since I'm painting mine, I would have no suggestions but "it will be on your circumstances."
It will mostly depend on the layout of your room, like do you have darker or lighter furniture, lighting, and the colors of your walls.
Best of luck!
Also, do as much homework as you can as any tips should be taken with a grain of salt as well.

Oil topcoat over water primer will work as long as the primer has cured. Primers cure fast.
Oil has the best finish and highest gloss. It lays flatter than water/acrylic.
Takes around 4-6 hours to touch dry, and up to 48 hours until cured (depending on the brand)
You shouldn't use oil based is when the color is white.
White turns yellow when indoors, and not exposed to the sun.
(Maybe American paint is different)
>>1197421
You can't thin Acrylic with water.
You can't even thin water based with water. You need thinner, reducer, spirits, etc depending on the paint.
Latex thins with water, but that's for walls.
Did this yesterday, but
Cleared the corner in my room. It is time to set up the legs of the tale so I don't worry about it later. Plus it saves space.
I never thought progress would be so slow.
Put part one of the legs together.
And legs are completely set.
Now I have put in an order for oil paint from dunn edwards and ready to pick up by tomorrow. Then try to find a suitable finisher as my filthy hands will be on this thing for years.
I hate this project is taking this long...
I've sanded down the table into the smoothest finish I can feel and see to be prepared for the paint coat. Got a sponge sander and it is so much more easier to handle than paper. Wiped with damp rag once more.
as I've used a water based primer, it HAS risen the wood grains by just a little. These spots were where previously the owner has covered the paper veneer with an object for a very long time or some type of water damage.
Any help or speculation about these areas much appreciated. It's interesting.
>>1196825
That's not a cum stain, that's obviously a shit stain.
t. 300lb neckbeard with a filthy chair

The place I picked it up from was from a very residential area on top of a hill that could have easily killed the engine of the crappy truck used to pick both the table and chair up. It was a house that looked like it was going to get uprooted by gravity in the near decade or so. The house had a pool and a few cig butts were here and there. He and his wife/gf were moving out.
Dude was nice looking, well shaped, and smelled a lot of b.o. from him in the heat. Natural.
>>1198057
Wait a minute. Are you Ron from Craigslist?
>>1198058
nope
CL is pretty damn big. Would've been a nice/awkward coincidence if a meetup on an anonymous message followed up on CL.
Speaking of, I actually never gave the guy my name. hah

That chair looks very familiar. There's a chair like that floating around San Francisco that has about 3 years of farts soaked into it.
