How does one read the hash marks on a micrometer, specifically tenths (.0001)?

I have a 1”-3” set of Mitutoyo Series 193 Digital Outside micrometer (pic related) and need to be able to occasionally do some grinding of gauge pins and such to a .0001 tolerance.

I’d rather not drop $100+ on a electronic micrometer but I suspect I’ll have to, simply to save my eyes and sanity and in that case, what do you think of this Starrett 3732XFL-1 Inch/Metric electronic micrometer for $127?

if only there were some kind of website where you could type in a question or a few related search terms and a thousand guides and videos of how to do said thing would magically appear.

When a mic measures tenths it's a 'vernier' micrometer.

Gotta eyeball it to see where it lines up the best. You're looking for where it lines up 'best'.

Personally I look to see where it's 'before' the line and when it's 'past' the line. And then you look for the line in that's lined up.

Thanks, that’s what I thought but in the past, I never had to bother checking beyond one thou (.001).

And that seems to confirm that I probably ought to get a electronic mic, so I won’t have to twist my neck around trying to read the barrel and in that case, what does /diy/ think of the above >>1191700 e-mic?
>>
>>1191712
Machinist fag here, make sure you're not looking at the lines at an angle. Always look straight down on each one to check it if possible.

As for what to get, go with Mitituyo. Starrett isn't what they used to be and a lot of their stuff has been sent off to china while Mitituyo is still all made in Japan AFAIK. I'm also curious how and why you got a grinder that will hold tenths when you can't read a micrometer to begin with. That's not something a hobbyist usually buys.
>>
>>1191737
Another machinistfag here who agrees. I buy my mics and calipers via Ebay most times.

Know how to read conventional mics because batteries never die at convenient times, but digital is wonderfully handy so most pros have both. You can buy non-digital measuring tools cheap at estate sales and liquidations and that's a great way to furnish your shop.

>I’d rather not drop $100+ on a electronic micrometer but I suspect I’ll have to

You'll be fucking delighted you did and I shit thee not. Quality tools last a lifetime.

I have a Digimatic and it's worth it's weight in young cunt lips. So are their digital indicators but dial is better for checking runout because of how we see analog dials. I have both.

Every machinist at any level should lurk PM. Here's the metrology forum:

This this this. For checking runout and tramming heads/vices a dial is the best thing.

what
just hold it in front of you and look at it
rotate the mic, not your head

The biggest meem with Digital asides from speed is having Metric with just a button.

> I'm also curious how and why you got a grinder that will hold tenths when you can't read a micrometer to begin with.

I’m also a machinistfag and work in a job shop and I’ve ran bridgeports for 10 years now, so I was taught how to read a mic when I first started but I’ve never needed to hold a tolerance tighter then .001 and with the Mitutoyo mic set I’ve got, (>>1191696) I didn’t even need to look at the hash marks on the barrel or thimble for that.

But I recently got a new gig where I’ll be helping out the grinding guy occasionally and my rule-of-thumb is “never lend (or borrow) someone your tools, especially expensive precession measuring tools” so I don’t like using his electronic mic (even though he said he’s cool with that).

>>1191742
> Amazon for reference:

That looks nice and not much more than the Starrett and I might as well “keep it in the family”.

> So are their digital indicators but dial is better for checking runout because of how we see analog dials.

I bought a Mitutoyo indicator because of the large dial, despite everybody telling me to get an Interapid as the integral mounting pin makes them quick and easy to chuck up with a collet but something broke inside and it doesn’t work, (yeah I know, send it back for repairs) so now I’m stuck with an ancient Gem indicator (pic related) from the 1950s that’s got a dial smaller then a midget lady’s watch…

>>1191750
> just hold it in front of you and look at it rotate the mic, not your head

I have to repeatedly check the part without removing it from the surface grinder fixture because locking the spindle on the mic and removing it to check with tolerances of .0001 +00005/-.00000 is a guaranteed fuck up.

Haha, you sure told him. Thank god we have people like you around doing 2 separate captchas(6-18 individual image identifications you are feeding to the Google™ image recognition subroutine) just to tell some ass hole that you have no intention to help and that he should be adding to Google™'s search meta-data instead of starting a conversation others might find useful.

OP here again; I'd recomend a mic a counter wheel like this >>1191696 or an electronic mike like this >>1191700

No need to ruin your eyes (and maybe what you're working on) trying to read microscopic has marks like it's 1917.

Almost everything in the US is still done in inches. The only metric prints I see at our shop are from Germany.

Pretty much all our prints are from U.S. customers and are almost all in metric but we convert everything to inches because fuck that shit, I'm too old to change now.

Elaborate
>>
>>1192559
Most manual machines are from WW2. You'd have to convert everything anyway if it was in metric unless they all have DRO's.

So yuros are right with metric but Day/Month is just fucking retarded.

Month/Day year better fits the ISO 9001 standard anyways which puts the month before the day.
>>
>>1192644
They try to justify it by saying it puts the numbers that change the most first.
By that justification they should read a clock SS:MM:HH
>>

except that theres a whole standalone standard for the date ISO8601 which is YYYY-MM-DD(HH:MM:SS)

and if youve ever tried to numerically search for dates you would understand how retarded it is to use anything but that standard

there are a ton of tutorials online. but in all honesty a digital calipers is just a lot easier and faster.

and they are not 100 dollars. you can find decent ones on amazon for like 25 bucks.

That part of the sticky could be applied to literally any post in the /diy/ catalog. The OP asked a good question which could stimulate a good discussion about micrometers and precision measuring tools. It was a good OP and potentially a good thread if you could take your impotent rage elsewhere.
>>
>>1192668
Since it was asking for intructions on how to use a relatively simple tool, It was actually a unnecessary and rather stupid thread.
Your search engine would have taught you well if you had just asked.
