Vanlife guy here looking to make a wifi antenna.
I would like a simple magnetic thing I can pop up on the roof.
Has anyone done something like this?
Bump for interest. Nomadic or do you stick to one city?

Hot glue a magnet to an alfa wifi atenna.
keep in mind that the metal siding of your van is going to make it a directional antenna if you stick it on the side.
Protip: Longer antenna cords will dampen your signal
Theif tip: You can take a magnet from a grocery store where they hang all those items on the side of a shelf.

You can just get a USB wifi dongle, a common CB antenna mount with a cheap antenna, and a long USB cable vs. the delicate high-loss wifi cable.
I'd slip a piece of PVC over the end of the antenna to enclose the dongle and the cable connection, then pot it with a tube of 3M 5200 marine sealant. Zip tie the USB cable down the antenna then you are done.
I did this with my shop wifi since I have a shipping container workshop. Drilled hole in sidewall, made and sealed PVC feedthrough (which you don't need to do of course) and since I had a damaged caulking gun tube of 5200 a made a large turd of it to encapsulate everything outside the container.
It's been working fine for about seven years. No need to overthink this or make anything delicate. You have money to make and futzing with a fragile abortion cuts into fap/rest time.

I utilized these three resources to build my own 2.4ghz yagi antenna
Popsicle stick frame: http://www.instructables.com/id/Easy-to-Build-WIFI-24GHz-Yagi-Antenna/
More detailed design but he doesn't use a balun:

I used this calculator to figure out how long to make my balun (I think it was about 4.28cm with RG-178 cable)
Pic related very much like my dipole
This may help you a bit with that lifestyle:
