This general is a tought experiment about the task of creating an entirely self-sustaining community.
We can learn many new things, but first we have to determine a few things
>where is the community
>how self-sustaining do we want to be
>the name(for memes and stuff)

>tought experiment
Why, when we have supar serios 100% real community threads all the time?
Go to r9k, maybe their Camp Homo shit is still running.

You probably want a very, very easy to maintain power system. I recommend a shitload of magnets and wind power turbines. They're not great, but even a retard can build and fix them. Ideally water or tidal would be best, but there are a lot of ways the government will crawl up your ass about those.
>>
how would you recycle your urine?
>>
>>1188073
i'll sign up if I can be annoying and tell everyone what to do all the time?

Fire, glass. Collect steam.
Not efficient, but why are we filtering our urine?
>>
>>1188073
>entirely self-sustaining
Not possible without going full paleo-nigger.
Best you can reasonably do is food, generic organic renewables, power, fuel, and lumber independence.

Iron can't be captured from the air.

>>1188883
>Ideally water or tidal would be best
Parabolic trough with heat pipe feeding into sterling or thermopile generator.
The efficiency is shit for thermoelectric, but you can't beat solid state in terms of self sufficiency.

>>1188885
Turn it into nitrates with hay piles, bacteria, and time.
>>
>>1188073
How about you just startup a company/factory, like a normal capitalist anno 2017. Not only will you be able to be self-sustaining, you have the opportunity to expand, and any wear cost can be covered.

Implying

The real problem is the wait to get approval. You'd go out of business waiting

Hydro power sounds nice in theory but requires a lot infrastructure to operate and for smaller projects is not worth the cost.
A good starting point would be to look at how much an average 3 person family home consumes (~11,000 kWh per year) and source that through renewable. The cheapest option would be solar and 12VDC wind, a battery bank, an inverted, and a backup diesel 120VAC generator.

Solar is shit and wont be good for another few years but if I had to design a low-impact off the grid power supply this is how I would do it

pic related from my renewables textbook. I can scan any related pages upon request

why do thermoelectric components have a lifetime when they're solid state?
>>
>>1189859
thermoelectric components undergo changes in temperature as is the nature of the components. These temperature changes causes the material to fatigue and become less efficient over time. The more fatigue the metal accumulates the less heat it will transfer lowering efficiency and requiring replacement

My book doesnt have anything on thermoelectric as there are no residential sized models available but geo/solar heating/cooling is definitely a viable option for building temperature regulation and hot water generation

Giving serious advice for something that only comes to fruition 1/10000 times isn't worth the effort.

If someone had the land, time, and money at hand to accomplish it, you would see helpful input.
That's how the /k/ ranch came about. Once the ball is rolling, you get people willing to help push.

.
If anon had said:
>start
Hey, i've given thought to self-sufficient community living and have determined a few things, but I would like some input. I'm running on an (presumably) scalable model using an assumption of 20 people using X acres.
I would need so and so amount of farmland and water, growing (things) with (methods).
Additionally, (quantity) (animals) needing (area) and (quantity of feed).
I figure blank for power, and blank for power storage.
I'm thinking of a dude ranch sorta thing for retarded socialists to pay for property tax and non-renewables.
Based on estimates the daily time requirements would be (time) spread out over (nubmer of people), and (amount) startup cost and time.

Anyone see flaws, or have tips or ideas?
>end

Then you would have a better thread right now.

Let's just do nuclear. You can fiz un-enriched natural uranium with either graphite or heavy water as a moderator.

We can buy the uranium on amazon.

Check out the videos and documentation in /ohm/ and ask any safety or circuitry related questions there.
>>1191510

All About Circuits is a great resource for theory which i highly encourage reading
https://www.allaboutcircuits.com/textbook/
Read through Chapters 1-7, 10-16 in volume one for an understanding in DC and Chapters 1-7, 9-11, 13 for an understanding in AC.

That's a lot of reading for just jumping into things so if you want a quick start read the DC chapters on basic concept, ohms law, kirchoff's current law, series and parallel circuits and ELECTRICAL SAFETY! Always wear CSA approved safety glasses and boots and never work live. People don't understand how dangerous electricity can be. All it takes is 100mA to kill you which is less then what your phone charger uses.

>>1191769
Thank you for the information anon. Also the note on safety is much appreciated. I'll read through the textbooks provided as I've found them all in PDF form.

100% self sustaining is impossible unless you have like, plastic factories, oil wells, and mines, since everything breaks down eventually.

But a very cut-off community that can essentially go very long without needing contact, or just like yearly minor trade runs, could work. Even the most remote steppe nomads would drop in to cities to trade for stuff they couldn't get themselves. No shame it in. The idea is just to have a level of autonomy where you could survive a decade or two of upheaval and only suffer some inconveniences.

Power storage is of course always the hardest thing to pull off. Batteries fail and need to be replaced. Not very self-sufficient.

A self-sufficient pumped-water storage wouldn't require anything more complicated than a huge hill and pond, or a fuckload of massive water tower projects. Not easy or efficient at all, but simple and relatively easy to maintain. But yeah, it'd have to be a hilariously colossal project to be able to store any reasonable amount of water for power. Basically a lake built on top of a large hill.
