One thing to keep in mind is that they may have an electrical hookup inside of the box. If it is still live, then this increases the number possibilities quite a bit.

I envision some sort of wifi connected VOIP phone that people can use for free. It will require a wifi connection of course. Doing it will be illegal, but I see it more as "constructive vandalism". It is ethical as it provides a free service to the public and to the homeless as they may not have access to phones.

If they've still got the phone line connection you could add a phone with just a button that connects someone to 911. You didn't need to put in coins for that on payphones. Could save someone's life.

PirateBox is a lot more better then those USB Flash Drive dead drops that people did years ago. I remember read about how people busted them and how the cops were doing the same because of illegal content.

Stick a cell phone charger in it, with USB micro B & C, lightning connector, and whatever that old 32 pin apple one is called. That could be a possibility if it still has power.

I always thought it would be cool to make a scavanger hunt thing that leads to some sort of prize. This could be the starting point. Person pick up a phone you have installed to hear a set of coordinates to the first clue. You could even make it ring occasionally to add to the mystery factor.

Touch ma bell's "derelict" property and enjoy getting a phonebook of charges thrown at you, some of which could be federal.

Make a couple of small sturdy metal boxes with a speaker and a circuit that gives off a 14.4k hertz tone... wire it to the power in the box and epoxy it too the wall... either it repels teens or teens get to explain to officers that they were breaking the unused phone booths because they were buzzing at a pitch the officer couldn't hear... videotape results..
