Over in /out/ we are figuring out how to keep moles out of our gardens.
I had this idea. I can build one easily enough, but I thought some ideas on the clicker mechanism from you guys would help. It had to be a loud/hard hitting clicker while being durable.
>>1182250
Basically, like this device, buried in the ground, but made out of something else so it is durable and very annoying.
>>1182250
Caddyshack, has all you need to know about gopher/mole control.
>>1182286
That isn't the point of the thread. I've seen that movie, though not since it first came out last century.
How about retrofitting some of the parts to a music box, and have the motion driven by a wind turbine instead of a wound spring
>>1182317
I don't have a scarp music box of any kind.
I just tried making a clicker using a party favor design, but with added stuff inside. It works very well, but obviously isn't very durable. The metal is far to thin to last any time at all. Though, I may rig up an SS spring steel pin on that metal flap. Then it would last far longer.
Your idea is great, but moles have pretty sensitive hearing, I don't think they need the added clicker? I've used those little seaside windmills for years and they work perfectly just stuck in the ground.
I'd like a dedicated VAWT for this purpose though.
>>1182250
build it with worn bearings on the turbine
>>1182250
just shoot them
>>1182547
OP clearly needs to trick the moles into consuming some sort of explosive. A cherrybomb should be perfect.
>>1182250
Build something like a drop hammer mechanism. Make the hammer weight really heavy and gear your turbine down so it goes wind wind wind wind *THUNK* wind wind wind wind *THUNK*.
>>1182816
better design. A spiral cam might work better though.
>>1182250
make sure it generates electricity as well.
Bless the Maker and all His Water
What is your issues with moles?
Your autistic clunking wind thing is worse than moles.
/DIY/ support moles so fuck off back to out before we arm moles with lasers.
>>1182850
that's the first thing that came to mind but I'm a lazy ass who didn't want to google and save that picture. Good on ya anon.
>>1182889
make a huge concrete pot for your plants
>>1182250
Genocide them. Its the only answer.
argon is heavier than air, fill their tunnels with it.
could also hook a hose up to the cars exhaust and put the hose in the holes.
As a bonus you are also fertilizing the ground, albeit a bit lower than is of any use, but fertilizing the lawn none the less.
A couple times last week I walked by a "ultra"sonic one in somebody's yard that I could hear and it gave me a headache. still mad
>>1183972
Yeah those are damn annoying to me more than moles it seems. They sound like bats. Not sure why.
>>1182250
It's my understanding they don't actually cause any problems, unless you have horses or they're cutting down your vegetable stalks, or you live somewhere without real winters so houses don't have foundations buried six feet. Stop overwatering and they may leave, and water for longer duration less frequently when you need to. Whenever a storm has knocked down a tree here, it was on a lawn that's watered all the time. Trees can't be bothered to grow deep roots when they're never thirsty.

so you are underage
>>1184010
I'm 28 and still hear high frequencies. It lasts a bit longer for those who actively avoid trauma.
>>1184010
I'm over 40. I've lost some hearing in one ear for ultra high stuff (retard brother shooting pistol near my head), but the other one is fine. I've always protected my ears and never listened to loud much with ear buds or do something stupid.
>>1184010
At some point I've been meaning to add a 2-8KHz screamer in my car's alarm system for getting rid of those damn kids
>>1183017
Because this is more efficient
thermobaric explosion. Suck out all of the air from the tunnels.

They hate rap music. Put a speaker in a box and burry it.
I used to have moles in my yard too. I spread this in my yard and it killed all of the grubs. After their food source was killed they left.

Do this in a pipe then. Paint the pipe.

Actually, this is a valid solution. All that is needed is a small pocket radio, a cheap rechargeable battery (optional only for night time use and less strain on PV cells) that matches its voltage with Schottky diode, and a solar panel.
Just put the radio in a sealed plastic box (dollar store pencil box) and bury it with the volume cranked. While tuning to a station would be best, it isn't required so long as there's ample static that is loud.

Total (buying all): $35.52
I'm sure we could replace the radio with some sort of single speaker with something that screeches really loud like a simple buzzer circuit that is far cheaper and can be salvaged from just about anything or pay a few dollars to order.

OP here.
I went through like 5 designs of buzzers and circuits using a pile of salvaged stuff thinking I was going to use a PV. Then I remembered I had this stuff and long enough extension cord for it. I removed all the other crap for solar and hooked it direct.
10 volt 5 watt/0.5A door bell buzzer
10 volt 0.75A wall adapter
Plastic peanut butter jars
Extension cord
This is the most annoying thing I've ever put together.
>>1185336
...and placed!
I can here if about 15 feet away, probably further at night when things are quiet outside. It sounds like an angry, in-ground, bumble bee nest, only a bit louder and with more bass.
I don't know how hot 5 watts will get inside that jar. I'll know by this evening if the soils will burn out in the bell. It is essentially air insulated, but the ground will take away the heat that reaches the jar walls. I suspect mechanical failure will occur first. The wall adapter shouldn't have trouble at all since it is rated a bit above what the bell needs, but you never know with Asian crap.
I'll update tomorrow or if it stops before then.
>>1185306
The French are crazy.
>>1182889
It's rather voles than moles, moles are insectivore. I read about putting dog hairs into voles galleries, might worth a try
>>1185365
Probably, but I've killed both in the area.
>>1185345
Update. The cap in the wall adapter overheated due to being in the sun in a bag (to prevent water exposure) and forgetting to place it in the shade. lol
