Hey /diy/.
Jumping over here from /fit/ with a question for you guys. I don't know a whole lot about power tools but I have this 18v mastercraft impact driver, featuring this 1/4" hex chuck.
How the hell do I get a drill bit in here? Must I buy special drill bits or an actual drill?
Thanks guys

Use quick-release drill bits rated for impact drivers. They have hexagonal shanks.

Use a drill for drill bits.
That impact takes 1/4" "Power bits" - hex bits that have a little groove in them for the locking mechanism.
There are drill bits that featue the power bit end, but ... just use a fucking drill bit.
Get yourself a philips, flathead, 1/4" and 3/8" socket adapter, and any other bits you frequently use (Robertson/square-drive, torx).

make sure you're using impact bits for anything important or if you value your safety. I've had a ton of normal ones just twist themselves right in half and a few fly off on me.

yeah, the best ones are a hardened steel shaft broached into a softer steel base, so they will twist and bend back. the cheap ones are all one or the other, so they either twist like putty and snap, or they shatter into shards when under too much stress.
hex bits are only like 2x as much? so if you look you should be able to find a set for $10 instead of $5.
impact drivers are 90% meant for high torque low speed applications though, pretty much driving screws. Also, get hearing protection, either muffs or earplugs. the hammer hitting is loud af.

on a hammer drill, yes....
but a fucking 1/4" impact?

what kind of fucking pussy is bothered by a 1/4 impact hammer? jesus christ your mother must have kept you on the titty for a long ass time
OP here. Thanks for your help guys
A drill bit in an impact driver???? Never seen that before.

Fucking $300 drill bit set sounds like a waste until you are drinning out leaf springs or doing sketchy shit u need 5 hands for.
Drill bits are like a good set of box end wrenches imo. If you value your time and safety buy at least 1 good set.

Maybe anon doesnt want the constant ringing in his ears known as tenitus?
Dunno. But the shit drives me insane.
Ear pro is just as important as protecting yar filangies and eyes anons.

just get a drill m8

Eww. Op should just get a regular corded drill. They cost 30 bucks.
>>1179484
You dont want to drill with that, it will suck. Its a driver for driving screws.

PPE? Please. Gloves and ear plugs are for little girls.

Impact drivers are made for driving screws and other threaded fasteners. They're good at providing the torque needed for that. Drilling works best with a constant speed / constant torque drill. You can get away with using an impact driver for small holes in wood or plastic (especially if they're small enough to not trigger the hammer mechanism), but just like how an impact driver is nicer than a drill for driving screws, a drill is nicer than an impact driver for drilling. And for larger holes and holes in metal, you really want to avoid jerking and binding as you drill. The tools to get depend on what you'll be doing, so the impact driver may work well enough.

>impact driver
bingo, it is a driver, meant screwing and unscrewing
either use a bit with a hex shank, or use a regular drill....you'll need one eventually anyway

Impact drivers were originally for loosening badly behaved nuts and bolts
You don't use them to tighten bolts or nuts unless they have a torque slip clutch because you don't want to over tighten fixings.
If you REQUIRE an impact driver to drive in screws then you have almost certainly not provided a sufficient pilot hole and probably completely misunderstand the mechanics of how fasteners are designed to work.
Most small battery drills come with a variable slip torque clutch and a low speed mode for driving screws.
Other than the slight difference in size a battery powered impact driver is at best superfluous and at worst an expensive screw ruiner.
