actually love this blade. clips on a belt loop and opens in a way most don't. love seeing people reaction to it.
>>
no one!? fuck it. w1 it is. just hope it quenches properly and doesn't break
>>
w2 has a nicer, stronger, sharper edge when finished

dude this is a slow board.
You didn't even wait a fuckin' hour.
Come back tomorrow or the day after and you'll have some responses. Some people here have jobs.

W1 and W2 are very similar, but W2 has a high vanadium content in it which will make it a bit stronger, tougher and gives it some wear resistance- basically it helps keep the grain size down on carbides when its being heat treated.
(Don't ever harden it in water unless its a great big fucking lump about an inch thick)

Some of us is just slow

So you gets to understand it better
>>
>>1178596
If you want a quick answer why not try to google search 'w1 vs w2 steel'
>>

>decides to ask 4chan instead
>goes to one of the slowest boards
>leaves in an hour and just guesses the answer to his question
I'm having a real hard time imagining a person like that can make anything

Is this the blacksmith general now?

coo'

I know you guys are probably sick of sword/bladesmith but I'm super stoked about finishing my first sword!
>>
>>1179239
Go back to making knives, that is just terrible. Did you just hammer flat some rebar>
>>
>>1178596
Go with the w1, it's alittle more forgiving and cheaper in most instances and you can quench in water. How do you plan on forming these knives? Forging, or just cutting out the shape and grinding?
>>
>>1179349
Hey ease up on the fellow, that's a solid first sword, he's even got a fuller running most of the length. Solid job imo.
>>
>>1179393
>most of the length
35% of the length about actually. And what looks to be a flathead screwdriver on the end but that may be the pic. I honestly cant tell if the pic is shitposting.

Just use 1095 like this fagot
>>
>>1179401
Sorry, but this is not a knife. Its from KC and i think its the 1st knife he made.
Its 4mm 1095 (60HRC) with Carbon Handle (full tang). He posted a pic with a split hair, so I think its sharp?
This isnt funny anymore, becaus you shouldnt make a fucking combat knife for EDC !

But the nice think is the engraving I guess

On a more practical note, W1 is mostly available in round stock and W2 is mostly available in bar stock.
>>
>>1181244
Unhardened W1 was used for a lot of years as extenders in drilling rigs, so there's quite a bit of old metal around in that 1" round stock
I'm not completely sure if anyone makes it new again in any large amounts, W2 can also be fairly uncommon as well I've found from at least my regular suppliers
