I just broke a plate, since my roomies have broken two and hide them (instead of manning up and telling me) it now means that I now only have one small plate left.

When it fell off and saw the crack and chipped corners I knew what I wanted to do. I rushed to my computer and searched for "Japanese gold ceramic repair" and I am now here. I usually dislike weebs and weeb stuff, but every culture likes gold and no one has to know that I did this.

The plate is a bit boring and plane, maybe the repair won't shine that much, but I will gain experience and save a plate.

I already asked google and YouTube, but all results either use very specific japanese substances that I have no access to, or do not set flush with the ceramic, looking like a bump on the plate. What I want is to retain the original form and texture, while leaving a visible vain of gold in the repair area.

pls no bully

Here is Humpty Dumpty himself
The crack is too thin once the two pieces are put together properly, it the corners that got the real damage

Glittered glue? Also, these seem like regular white plates to me, why are you being so anal about them? Just smash the last one and tell roomies to chip in 5$ so you can get a new set at Wal-Mart if they don't want to eat straight outta the pan.
>>
>>1177012
Not OP. The reasoning behind the concept is to not cry over a broken item because it's been made more beautiful for having broken or some shit like that.
>>
Gold pigment, epoxy. Mix pigment into part A well, add part B to recommended volume, mix well. Stick plate back together.

Use painters tape on the top (eating) side so it sits flush when cured.

Kitsugi was more of an art thing than a regular use thing.
>>
>>1177003
well, if you do this, may I recommend beating it into your roomie's heads to NEVER put it in the microwave. Gold leafing is bad in the nuker, trust me. Probably already know this, just saying. Roomies man.

I just want to try this out and experiment in something I won't get so anal if I fuck up. And Wall-Marts in SpicLand only sell those in 12 piece sets
>>1177013
Basically
>>1177017
I have Odontology Silicone for making impressions (I am not sure if it is PVS or actual Silicone). The Heavy one (clear) is easy to use and fairly accurate for this use.
Maybe I can make a negative from the plate I still have with that silicone and put it over the chipped area to have the right shape, add some Acrylic Gypsum Separator and use it in the broken plate.

I am not sure if it will work, I have never tried using the separator on Epoxy, maybe I should also consider using the Light Silicone (dark Blue), that thing has an oily feel to it and wont stick to castings nor some silicones but it has the consistency oh honey while curing and is a hell to work with.

I will have the silicones (or PVS, I need to check) by Monday, I need those things anyways, would not hurt to try
>>1177019
I would not worry about that, I have migrated all my utensils to my room, it is kind of comfy to make tea in your room in the middle of the night.
>>
>>1177003
get
more
(cheaper)
plates

thrift stores can hardly get anyone to take them since people don't want full sets anymore, especially if there is something missing
>>
>>1177017
Epoxy often turns to another color when used to fix plates and shit. And if you have a dishwasher it will eventually break again. Please don't consider suggestinh washing by hand. That shit is fucked up, I don't do it!
>>
>>1177199
yucky you're one of those
>>
>>1177017
>Gold pigment, epoxy.

That will end up costing the same or more than just buying new cheap dishes, and it probably won't hold up very long either. From his pic, it looks like the break isn't clean and so the epoxy will need to bridge large gaps that will end up being weak and come apart, especially if put through cycles of heat like a dishwasher does.

OP here is your only solution: buy new plates.
>>
>>1177003
Are you really that broke?
Look into arcopal plates they are like six pieces for $5.
And buy then for a reasonable local store not online and pay %500 premium.
>>
>>1177199
There are certain specialist resins which do not discolour over time. They use to fill in any weaknesses in sheets of marble, then polish it out so its invisible. Very expensive though.

No one uses dishwasher in my country, that and I wash then as soon as I finish eating

And I do not care that much for the plate, I want something cheap to practice in before I break something important.

I am just asking for the best method to use, This is not my area of expertise and do not know what exactly I can use and how different things will react to one another. Google and practice are important, but some guidance in this rabbit hole wouldn't hurt either.
>>
>>1177338
Then do the authentic way...
>>
>>1177269
But what if it has a layer of gold or gold dust mixed in?
Will the gold mask any decoloration? or do the problems with epoxy when exposed to food and moisture only get worse?
>>
>food-grade adhesive
>food-grade gold flake
I mean really, how hard is this?!

Potter here. A kintsugi repair kit with real lacquer and non-precious metal powders can be obtained fairly easily online for $60-100. I don't think that plate is worth it, but whatever. It's your plate. I've got a broken Judith Duff yunomi that I think is worthy of a gold repair, but I don't wanna be the one to do it. I'll find somebody who's actually good at it to fix it eventually. That little fucker's probably going to be worth thousands in a few generations though. Lot of sentimental value to me.

Any epoxy that will cure in a ceramic-like feel once polish? Rubbery corners are a great way of protecting something, but not really what I am looking for

>>1177486
Thank you, I know that it is stupid to repair such a cheap plate, but ceramic potters are hard to come by and I really don't want to fuck up a good plate.

I hope you get it fixed, it would be a nice story
>Grandpa Anon broke it and thought that Fixing it with gold was going to make us less mad at him
>>1177446
They are from a plastic model, the light silicone is so fluid that it gets everywhere and cures with minimum deformity. Very useful in rehabilitation; when you want to fix a fracture or natural abrasion
>>1177493
D-did I say something wrong?!
>>
>>1177486
A bunch of people at my university got really into Kintsugi after a student accidently broke one of the professor's Warren MacKenzie vases.

People were freaking out because expensive and his reply was something to the extent of, well now we get to learn about Kintsugi.

He didn't care that much because his house is full of pottery and he owns a lot of pieces by MacKenzie and he's even done several exchanges with him. If I recall he used actual gold to repair it too, not just gold colored pigment. We have a few of his pieces that he gave out to seniors that have gold inclusion in them. While the amounts are pretty small, there is probably at least $50 worth of gold in each mug.

>>
>>1177017
Been a while, but IIRC the standard procedure for kintsugi is to apply the epoxy, then cover it with gold dust.
>>
is epoxy edible?
>>
>>1179378
There are some used in Plumbery and Aquariums, there must be at least one epoxy out there that is inert once cured. If not then I may have to do it the old fashion way
>>1179371
I have seen that and i do not understand how the gold sticks to the cured resin, or maybe they apply it before it cures completely.
>>1177892
Sadly (not really) it seems like I may have to wait and do it the original way. All other methods leave a bump where the crack is
>>
>>1179530
There are several gold clay/moldable gold products that become solid gold once fired. That might be appropriate.
>>
>>1179550
God itself it pretty moldeable. I personally know of Gold "amalgams" (they are not amalgams, but tiny gold beads that get press together into a cavity)for dental obturation, but I have never worked with them, only Silver-Mercury amalgams.
The latter looks pretty good once polished and hardens just like iron, I wonder if a gold "amalgam" would be similar to work with
