Are there any alternatives to Dykem that don't suck and are cheaper? It feels like robbery every time I buy a can.

Black candle smoke.
But that depends on why you need dykem. Fitting parts traditionally used smoke or inletting black/blue
Sharpie.

I actually do that when I'm working on my old shotguns but I use Dykem for fabricating. I coat the work and scribe on top of the Dykem.
>>1175661
I've done that in the past but it takes a long time.

Sharpie marker

My old man used to use cheap red/blue nail polish cut with either nail polish remover.
It dries quick and easy clean off.

Depends on what you're doing with it. Tubalcain did a video a few weeks ago on making an old time copper based layout solution. Used battery acid I believe. Check it out if you like. Mrpete222 on YouTube.

improvise

get a big marker or mix your own fluid, thats probably what i gona try dykem is practicly non avayable/non existant around here - in hardware stores(probably only mail order webshop)
>>1175648
I saw some starrett layout fluid at a estate sale once, I wonder how much they charged for that shit new
why even waste time with layout blue?
shit never comes off
but if i do need some shit i use my green sharpie
>>1175856
>shit never comes off
It's not our fault you're retarded.
>>1175856
are you not allowed to use anything stronger than rubbing alcohol?
>>1175867
probably they baned it because anon drank it
>>1175648
dykem does last a long damn time too
How often do you buy the shit? My shop has been using the same bottle for like four years.
>>1175648
I don't know. I can't find it on my country. There are other brands.
500cc bottle is about 20usd
Is not crazy expensive, but is just alcohol, rosin, and pigment.
Some people make small batches with that and ink from pens, or they buy marker ink (smaller bottles, but higher price per volume)
>>1175867
Even rubbing alcohol should work fine...the dye itself is alcohol-based.
>>1175648
How much are you paying? How much are you even USING?
I bought a quart bottle of the stuff a long time ago for like $16. I overbought like a motherfucker, because I haven't even used up the little 3oz dauber jar I put it in. Granted, I don't use it that often, but still.
>>1175648
Double sided tape grips my shit.
Use it to pin down CNC work but it eventually costs more than the Plexi I am cutting.
Layout dye is drippy, flakey shit. Even NIMS student projects accept Sharpie for layout dye because nearly every machinist it the field uses thick Sharpies.

>I don't know how to apply Dykem the post
CRC makes a spray layout fluid. Bit cheaper, doesn't go as far, works if you're using so little that you care about absolute cost, not per unit.
>>1177007
No, they don't.
Try jenkem, instead.
What do you mean it's expensive? I get this shit from a local supply store for $4 a bottle.
If you have CNC you don't need to fuck around scribing lines.
>>1177277
That's good shit
>>1175661
If cutting fluid or grease is around, that can get wiped off by mistake pretty easy.
