I feel that an external wrap around porch is necessary. Gives one (human and doggos) space to stroll, smoke, and ponder. Aside from generally extends your sq footage in an already small space... it gives you easy access and a place to tie down/mount pulleys for the storm shutters.

Alternately 'flat roof' it and put a deck up there. It's easier to build (plywood,foam,epm sticky wrap) and you can have a single drain point for greywater collection.

'Railway towers' and 'fire lookout towers' are good inspiration ... plus are old enough to find plans in old books/historical documents.

Towers > Barns > Containers > Suburban Ranch Homes
