I found this: http://the-knowledge.org/en-gb/apocalypse-proof-kindle/

but I wanna know if there's any better DIY, with maybe a larger screen or ability to view PDFs and html files as well

Geez, if we only had a physical version of digital books that did not require power to read...
Either that or get a hand crank generator and a capacitor bank, since batteries will be gone after the first decade.
>>
>>1172283
obviously physical is the ideal option but there's a lot of info on the internet that you would need to waste a shitload of money printing it all
>>
>>1172364
Internet... you're not really thinking this through are you.
>>
>>1172364
all you had to do is say "bunch of info i have downloaded to a handful of microSD cards and I want to be able to read it on X device" and nobody would have known you're retarded, but you had to go and use the words "apocalypse proof" and "internet" in the same breath and now we all know
solar panels connected to a usb 3.0 charger are probably the simplest you can get
>>
>>1172278
>the-knowledge

That was a waste.

>I'm going to give you information, but not really, sorta.
>>
>>1172364
It's not the ideal option at all, books are fragile as shit
>>
>>1172381
Printed on quality paper they can last hundreds of years.
>>
>>1172278
Paper is actually very resilient. Hard drives, CDs, and floppies only have tens of years of lifespan. ROMs are much better.

You'd want a series of books about how to build a device to read data encoded in additional books using redundant image matrix storage.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barcode#Matrix_.282D.29_barcodes

Also just having the survival knowledge in books to start off with.

Gold embossed pages would be optimal for the longest term storage, like the Mormons claim their ancient book is written on.
>>
>>1172381
I've got a 400 year old Japanese book that is completely legible despite very minor water damage and worm damage.

It is also so unremarkable that it is almost worthless. Like $40.
>>
>>1172376
actually, in theory large portions of the internet infrastructure should survive just fine. These days pretty much all the systems are automated, so they dont need people, and allot of the data is transferred via satelites, so it would be unaffected by ground based bullshit. As long as the distributed servers stay powered(which they should unless their city's power grid gets fucked), and you can convince the ISPs to give you access, you should be good. but that's assuming alot.

>>1172393
Modern books are kinda garbage for long term use. The paper they are printed on starts to yellow and breakdown after only 30-40 years, and that's not even accounting for regular use.

I've killed DOZENS of e-readers/tablets/phones (basically anything with a screen), I can count on one hand how many I've damaged...

one was spilled wine that only ruined 4 pages
one was shredded by a jackass
one was a high tide low tide fuck-up
>>
>>1172478
It's also assuming that the HDDs on the server don't die.

Google replaces dozens of HDDs on their servers each day.
>>
>>1172478

The only realistic cause of a long term shtf scenario where you would have to bug out and need this info anyways would be nuclear war, in which case you would be shit out of luck for internet.
>>
Have two X devices with micro sd card slot.
A main one and a back up one.
SD card(s) with all the information (movies, music and porn are a bonus) you need saved from all different websites. Micro SD cards are getting bigger in storage space and prices are dropping.
A portable solar power charger and a portable usb charger.

Shit is easier to care then x number of books or shit printed out from the internet.
>>
>>1172381
Literally any Archivist worth a shit will tell you the only viable long-term storage medium for Information is Paper. Digital preservation opens up a fucking Pandora's Box of reverse-engineering access to storage mediums, proprietary file formats, and god knows what else. OP said "Apocalypse Proof;" that means fucking Paper.

until the high altitude nuke goes off sending a huge EMP across the nation(all nations) and all non military electronics are useless unless you stored them in a bank vault

.txt files
most, it not all computer based devices can at least read them.
want graphics, do them in ascii art style.

>>1172497
as >>1172505 said, doesn't take much to build one.
>>
>>1172278
By the way, that book is shit, there is no real information other than some basic common sense about things, the text is very superfluous to take up space, it is very meta but very little meat

Anyone has any good collection of actual knowledge/textbooks for restarting civilization types?

in theory, you are a moron. 1 power will be an issue. 2 automation needs maintenance. 3 convincing isps in a post apocalyptic scenario... isps would be dead, you would need to get the power grid setup then hack into the system. not to mention that satas have a theoritic life span of 5-7 years without energy in an ideal environment.
>>
>>1172799
this, get chiseling
>>
>>1172283
Batteries aren't exactly complex mechanisms... you could make more / use a battery type that can be easily 'refurbished'.

But a capacitor bank could last a very long time, if good quality. Would be a cool thing to try at least.

unneeded. Even if americans and russians nuked every major population center and 95%+ of humanity died, civilization would pretty close to bouncing back after 30 or 40 years. Assuming no more wars.
>>
>>1173012
yeah what's 30-40 years when you're 30 yourself, am I right?
>>
>>1172478
>and allot of the data is transferred via satelites, [...]
This is completely wrong. A tiny, negligible amount is transferred by satellite, and satellite Internet, especially consumer Internet, is generally pretty damn terrible.

>>
how long would sd cards last realistically?
I read they are good for transfers but not for long term storage
>>
>>1172496
Microfilm would last just as long and is a denser storage medium, any GOOD archivist would know that. With a loupe and a light source you could read it anywhere too.
>>
>>1172523
good luck reading txt or anything normal with a mac

He explicitly said PDF and html files you dense spastic. He's trying to find a method of reading information only available in a digital format instead of printing a lot of stuff out.

>>
>>1173234
lets face it we are all dense spastics bumping this moronic thread

I take my kindle 1 everywhere and it still works fine. Just a little situational awareness makes a huge difference in your life.
>>
>>1172574
Name other texts that covers what The Knowledge does, as in depth or deeper, in the same length. We're waiting.

The author himself realized what he'd set out to do would be a literal library, so a short summary showing that something was possible and the very basic steps to accomplish it isn't too bad. As a primer, I think it works pretty well.
>>
>>1172278
A microcontroller with a monochrome display and books stored in plaintext on OTP ROM chips. Not very functional, but extremely reliable, especially if you use space/military grade components.
>>
>>1172483
Some people can't keep from their breaking shit.
I've broken one phone and then one keyboard when I spilled a beer. Everything else I own still works unless I intentionally broke it.
