You can get a solar cell and a couple of batteries to run an inverter, It won't allow you to cook or use great amounts of energy, but at least it will power your lights, laptop, etc...

Although you should be careful as where to install them, since they might also get stolen.

Not directly, a battery is DC.

You would have to change it into AC.

How are you gonna power the inverter without power???

Keep in mind that many solar inverters won't work if the mains are missing; they are not stable on their own. You need one which can run independent and you will probably have a short outage if either it or the mains kick in.

If you don't have a charge controller the batteries will assplode. Also, for things like laptops/phones, get a car charger for them. The kind that you plug into the cigarette lighter. Then you can use a 12 volt battery array, clamp on a "Cigarette Lighter Power Socket Adapter" to the battery so you can plug your laptop directly into it. It makes life soooo much easier and you can extend your laptop/phone's battery life to absurd amounts (pic related). You won't need an inverter for that purpose, just one of these:

I rhink harbor freight and northern tool sell kits anyway. And you dont need a big panel if u only use it intermittently.
