Re-cap old AM/FM receiver amplifier?

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Have pic related, Kenwood KA-A10. Just noticed over weekend that one channel is very low output (virtually dead); the remaining channel has what sounds like "clipping distortion" where at high output it breaks up.

Will running through this unit and changing out the electrolytic capacitors have a reasonable-to-high chance of fixing this thing?

I'm on the fence on whether to attempt a fix; I can prototype and build circuits, and do the solder work, but historically have about 50% chance in fixing any circuit I dig into, and chance are better if I know what issue is up front/is obvious. If it's not the caps chances are I won't be able to figure out the issue unless something is obviously burnt.

Clean out all the sound controls before you do anything on the circuit board. In my experience, most problems can be fixed just by cleaning out the controls.

The volume control has prior issue... static when it's moved. I usually clean by turning off and running back and forth a few times... I'll check that first.

Get your hands on some deoxit or contact cleaner and electrical lubricant.

electrolityc capacitor doesn't age well. its propably a good thing to change them

Open it up and clean everything. Iso alcohol is your friend. Bad caps will be pretty obvious looking usually. Deoxidizing the pots might help. I find opening stuff up and using common sense results in fixing most stuff.

That said, it's not exactly a prize amp, might not be worth the time to do any major work unless it has sentimental value or you just want to fix it for fun

Blew out volume control with contact cleaner. No more static when I move it and distortion is cleaned up on left channel, volume still low on right channel, but it's clear if you crank it up. So, could still be problem with board, or like >>1170061 said limited to controls. The volume wiper probably needs replaced...

Looking closer, I've issues with whole system... I've a set of Polk Audio speakers where 1 passive sub drives into set of 2 mid/high boxes left and right; inspecting the right one the cone suspension is completely rotted out on the mid driver. I'm going to need to take the speaker out of the loop, test the receiver/amp separate to ensure I don't have problems with this speaker set, then either rebuild or replace the mid driver(s).

Job calls. I'll mess with it next weekend and if thread's still up will update.

Reason I don't want to open it is exactly this; unit has no sentimental value and economically may not be worth fixing... I don't mind putting $10 in parts into it and an hour, but for even that modest investment I'd want to know issue would be addressed.

I'll open it up next weekend and decide what to do. It may be time to retire it and the speaker set hooked to it.

chuck it out op, just go to craigslist or similar and have a look, this stuff is there all the time

pawnshops are a good place too

Yeah it's going to be more than a hour and $10 to open it up, find a suitable cap on digikey , pay the shipping desolder the caps and install the new ones and connect it back up.

If you like doing that stuff like me it's kinda fun, but if time is money don't bother.

Just hit up Craigslist or whatever, or order a Chinese class d from AliExpress or Amazon. It will be smaller and probably sound better too.

Contact cleaner on balance slider now.
