This seemed like the most appropriate board apologies if not. I've just moved to a rather bad part of a city for work purposes and i have strict landlord (they wouldn't give permission to remove cupboard doors due to a fire risk?) And I'm looking for ways to secure my apartment. I live on the second floor in a block of 4, there is a main security door and then each person's door to their apartment. So far i have put child locks on all windows. Put some doorstops behind my apartment door and put a weapon in each room. I know these methods aren't really effective but I'm unable to make any permanent changes such as alarms or CCTV since the landlord will not allow it. Are there any methods to make my home that bit more secure so i can relax?

Put a dead bolt and a chain on the front door, it won't stop anyone determined but will certainly slow them down.

alarms and cctv are not permanent items, you can easily just put it on top of a cupboard etc

get a programmable timer switch for lights and a tv so it looks always occupied

also you can put plywood against the windows so it looks blocked off from the outside

other than that, back up your data off site, put valuables into deposit boxes and get insurance i guess

also get a dog

As a security specialist, you should be able to buy a few door contacts and whatnot to arm the place up with, but that isn't worth shit without an outside monitoring company.

Start with physical security, bolts on the doors, strong, hard to pick locks on the front door (you wouldn't believe how easy it is to pick a residential lock), nail or bolt windows shut.

Part two, don't make yourself a target. Make sure valuables aren't visible from the doorway or windows, make yourself as nondescript as possible.

To cap it off I would get a couple of cheap web cams and just set the down in a few spots. If somebody does break in at least you will have a face to give to the police, try to position the cameras in a way that would give you a good facial shot from a doorway or window. You can even make cheap web accessible cameras yourself with line a raspberry pi

What do you do about outdoor monitoring, like a side access gate?
Roll the dice with a "Night vision" camera? pair it with a motion detecting flood light?

>hard to pick locks
pleb here, any suggestion? I thought they are all the same?

You can get outdoor cameras cheap and easy, I don't know a lot about non commercial brands, but I think nest has a few water resistant ones that are wireless. Some come with the lights on them, but you will definitely want to install motion detectors, those alone help scare people off.

Again, can't say much for non commercial, but look at the pin type, it should say something about being pick resistant, and having a spool or crown type pins.

Ignore that "security specialist". Life isn't a mission impossible movie. People who break into residential homes don't pick the lock on the front door lol, they smash windows or kick in doors.

Also a deadbolt is only as strong as the thing it is "bolting" into. So if it's just going into cheap plywood frame then a strong kick to door will still open it. If it is going into a metal bracket then it will be slightly more secure.

A cheap and pretty effective way of securing a door while you are at home is by just laying a piece of wood or metal horizontally on brackets like on the gate of castle in movies.

But desu nothing will stop a determined crazy "axe-murderer" type person from busting in so your best security option is a 12 gauge shotgun with buckshot that you can comfortably operate. And don't forget to buy a gun safe so that if/when they bust in while you aren't home your gun isn't taken and inevitably used in a violent crime buy some degenerate basketball-american.

Security tech here. Get those wireless door contacts and wireless glass break detectors. Pair with a fuckload of piezo screamers around the place and you will be fine. Don't waste your time with cameras since every thief has a hoodie and a mask on, just get some dummies near the entry points and big 'cctv surveillance in place' signs. That will cover you just fine.

Your average thug will either say fuck it when they see cameras, or break open a door, sirens go off and they ditch. I don't know if anyone on this board has been in a house with 4-5 140db piezo screamers going off, but it really fucks your shit up.
