HP fans! Posting wands that I'm carving for commissions. Questions, comments and suggestions appreciated!

Nah, that's cool mate. If I can use my imagination that my wand shoots bolts, then I can just use my imagination that my pencil is a wand.
>>
Nice carving work. Have you considered adding epoxy to make it looked like there's a crystal in the triple helix? Probably wounding make sense for a woodland type wand but would look cool in a fancier looking wand.

Trying to figure out how I'd go about doing that! Pic related.
>>
>>1162736
Steam bend it. To get the crystal inside and close the gap.
>>
>>1162736
Wrap up the helix area in something the epoxy doesn't adhere to or is easily sanded away. Then inject the epoxy in. You won't get a crystal unless you carve it in but at the least, the helix will look like I formed around something.

You must be fun at parties
>>
I do t go on /diy/ much but is this shit seriously a general you guys have here?
>>
>>1162748
There was one a while back, covered different wood stains, types of wood, and polyurethane finishes.
>>
>>1162748
Well it's here now, isn't it? Diy is diy.
>>
>>1162748
Oh yeah. We also regularly discuss how to roll our own tampons, and how infuriating it is when our man just won't. fucking. listen. But the mods don't like that one because it's not really diy related. Hugs are always appreciated here!

Thinking of adding mother of pearl from abalone shells onto the handle, mosaic-esque. Anyone got tips on inlays and whatnot?

Also, thanks!
Here's a pic before I used an xacto blade to smooth out the triple helix:
>>
>>1162709
I bet you like to jam these up your butt.
>>
>>1162896
>>1162899
Amazing. Gotta look for a video to see that.
>>
>>1162709
Woodworking prowess aside, and you really are doing a good job there OP, you should know that an appeal to real HP fans will fall on deaf ears. How are you threading the core through the triple helix? And why is your wand at least 3 inches longer than about every wand in the series?
>>
>>1162922
Whatever my clients do with my wands is none of my business.
Though, that is part of the reason why they are designed to shatter into very painful and difficult to remove pieces if they are inserted into bodily cavities...
>>
>>1162948
I'll take three
>>
>>1162947
If someone's paying upwards of two hundred for my stuff, I make it as long as they want, within reason, despite what measurements are more common.
>>
>>1162947
It's a triple core processor, duh.
Intel, baby.
>>
>>1162752

I missed that one.

>>1162709

What type of wood do you use?
How fragile are those things?
Stain and finish?
Do you hand carve all of them or have you considered doing part of the work on a wood lathe?
>>
>>1162953
Ah. Didn't know you were getting paid for this. Carry on OP. Good job.

Forgot pic, Arizona ice tea can and letter size paper for scale.
>>
>>1162960
I use a mix of box cutter blades and xacto blades for general shaping and detailing, and use a black and decker rotary tool for drilling holes.

Tulip poplar is a great wood for proof of concept and experimental designs because it's very soft/has a nice grain/can be obtained locally.
I also use pine, Canadian maple, etc. trying to buy snake wood and other exotic wood turning blocks.

I use oil-based stains and satin/gloss finishes. Gonna try gunstock finish for the stag wand. Had little success with water based stains.

Wand fragility depends on design and wood type. Spirally wands are for display and occasional swishing and flicking only. The hardier wands can lobotomize you pretty well.

Thanks. I dont plan on doing it. I dont have the tools nor the skills. Im just amazed of it cus i never thought wood could be worked that way. Spirals made around a hole without being made separately and then assembled

Good luck selling those. Im not a big fan of that universe but i did liked the beasts of every film
>>
So op... what's your source for unicorn hairs and Phoenix feathers?
>>
>>1162989
I have a connection with the Shanghai exotic meat market.

Also, phoenixes and unicorns aren't real.

>>

These take a lot of time to make, so I only do take commissions, instead of making a bunch an selling them. The fancier ones I make for fun I auction off.

>>
>>1162972
I have found some pretty cool woods OP. Wanna see? Maybe something fancys ya.
>>
>>1163091
OP here. Sure thing! I'm probably going to get my wood off of exotic wood dealers online.

Well here's one. I can split it or get more solid pieces. They are from stumps of pine trees long gone now, the resin from the pinetrees collected in the roots and turn them hard and kept them from rot. These are what is left. I believe its slash pine. Very tough to work, tbqh id say clamp it down good and use good sharp knives and chisels with this one.
>>
>>1163158
Wouldn't know what to do with this, other than making a large sculpture! I'm stumped (no pun intended)

OP: Thanks for the link. A lot of these woods smell like deforestation and destruction of the Amazon. Nice.

On second thought, maybe I'll stick to rummaging the forests around here after thunderstorms. Thanks!

You're complaining about people carving pieces of wood on an anime image sharing board. Congratulations, Shinji.
>>
>>1163173
Some of them are really nice hardwoods native to the great lakes area. The guy has some nice indigenous cherry.
>>
>>1163158
OP here. Any tips on sharpening blades? I have a bunch of xacto blades but I feel like it's a waste to chuck em after they dull so quickly.
>>
>>1163178
and curly maple
>>
>>1163178
OP here. You're right! The wood like figured mango would also be a somewhat eco-friendly choice. And some of the wood is really cheap-it'd be more efficient than spending time in the forest.

Thanks anon!

>>1162966
That's cool, the skill level is there. I'd say these remind me more of Tolkien though. Like I said, if you're getting paid it's whatever and the salty hating morons can go eat a dick. I hope you're not taking more than about 6 hours to make these though. If you need any advice about using gunstock finish (Tru oil) I can help, and yes for the love of God resharpen your exacto blades! Just like you'd sharpen a knife: use a stone, or sandpaper and a piece of glass. You can even shape your own blades out of old blades, or hacksaw blades, if you have a Dremel, make little 1/8" chisels or whatever you need.
>>
>>1163246
OP here
Slow down there, big boy. Piece of glass? Make your own blades? Elaborate.
Tru oil advice-hard to tell whether everything I've seen/read is necessary, including using all off their conditioning/finishing products, or whether I can just use the oil/sealer. Would appreciate advice on it.
>>
>>1163017
Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic
>>
>>1163315
Filler is for if you have very porous wood, it's a time saver. Tight grained stuff is fine to just use oil. Don't get caught up in putting on numerous coats then taking it off, then putting it back. Load of shit.

Google knife sharpening or chisel sharpening, there are plenty of YouTube videos. Find one where they use a sharpening stone. If you're a poorfag you can take a piece of glass, say about 6x10, lay sandpaper on it, and use it just like they use the stone. Use common sense of course.
>>
>>1163478
Thanks! Excited to save $ on blades.
Does pure tung oil have any advantages over the oils that have other polycarbons in it? I know the latter helps with drying, but it'd be cool to work with food-safe quality oil that won't give me cancer.
>>
>>1162896
>>1162888
>>1162709
It would seem more sturdy, higher quality, and easier to make to create three long, straight lines, and steam bend it.
>>
>>1163484
Oh, and with a grinder you can shape old blades any way you want, just do it a little at a time and dunk in water often to avoid overheating. They are hardened and you want to keep the temper. Shape away, then sharpen.

Food grade? For that I'd say either that stuff they sell for salad bowls/cutting boards, just wax, or possibly two part epoxy. Sounds crazy, but it's inert once it dries and hard as a wedding dick, not to mention shiny.
>>
>>1163519
Where's the fun in that?
>>
>>1163533
>'hard as a wedding dick'
>definitely using that phrase EVERY DAY
>>
>>1163519
Didn't knew that was possible either

Have you considered branching out into larger pieces, like brooms?

Also check out Little Witch Academia. The big money is in anime neet bux.

>>
>>1163592
Sure! I'll put the skull pope on the backburner. Again. Little BITCH Academia...
>>
>>1163550
Yeah... This really is the wrong thread for that one, isn't it? Sorry anons. But for the record, as a non-wizard, I can tell you that the phrase IS 100% accurate. Your dick will never be as hard as it is on your wedding night.
>>
>>1163824
I usually say 'harder than the body of ____'s dead mother', but that's just me.
