The old thread didn't open, so here's a new one for Mad Max -style, post-apocalyptic -looking car tuning.

I have bought a 1996 Mazda 323 and a welding rig for this, and my goal is to make it look as post-apocalyptic as street-legally possible. I have until the start of May to make a list of planned modifications and get it accepted at Trafi (Finnish office of vehicle inspections), so ideas for cool-looking modifications are needed the most before the end of the month.

Some other people got interested in similar projects too, so feel free to post whatever you're planning or making too. The station wagon in particular was pretty awesome.

What are your thoughts on the topic?

Here's some of the ideas this far:

Since hood and trunk cover don't have to carry any weight, they ought to be some of the safest parts to modify. I'm planning on giving the car a larger, boxy hood that looks like there's a larger than intended engine beneath it. I'd like to remove the front fenders entirely or at least replace them with something more jagged, but I'm afraid that's going to be hard to get past the notorious Finnish vehicle inspection.

Here's another design for the hood. Simpler to make and even more brutish, but I'm afraid with its sharp corners it won't be accepted at the inspection. While I'm not hopeful about this, I'm still going to ask about it just in case.

Mounting detatchable zombie slaying gear like those jeeps mount shit all over.

Overhead rack and faux or hell, i got a pipeline bro, maybe a real outer roll cage. Roof rack. Jerry can on the trunk thats actually a blutooth speaker. Maybe a litle lift and mud tires bit leave it 2 wheel drive. Flat black the rest of it.

Water cooled or diy light bars.

Underglows

Dunno. Was gonna leave this baby alone but yolo. Can biy a nice crown vic limbo for $4,500 all day. If i want a nice one i will build it.

Welcome back! Nice to have you here.

I really liked the idea of installing pipes from the front of the roof to the rear of the car, as it gives more shape and appearance to the otherwise plain top and rear of the car. The problem with this design is that it won't leave space for the trunk to open, but I came up with a possible solution for that...

Telescopic rear pipes! Having the rear part of the pipes made of two hinged pieces telescoping into each other would allow the trunk to open, in addition to allowing the pipes to go in straight line from front to tend of the car.

I've also thought about putting a piece of diamond plate on top of the trunk, but it's definitely not enough. Putting either the spare tire or a jerrycan onto the rear of the car would look good, but it would cover up the rear lights so they would have to be on the top of the trunk. Still far from ideal, so I really need more ideas for the rear end in general.

One definitely cool idea is to skin old car tires to cover the bumpers with. I'm also considering making other things like fender flares or side strips out of tires if possible.

Some minor ideas for the sides: Air vents, random metal patches and reinforcements, and protective pipes around the bottom of the car. Hopefully I could saw off the bottom part of the front bumper/spoiler, since almost any car looks more badass without it.

Sides in general are another part of the car I'd need more ideas for.

Massive loader tire. Someone got a rock with the sidewall. Could bolt it to my pupe bumpers my and a bro are building. Bumoers will double as air tabks for the compressor. Getting 100% dudty cycle pumps and may put a tank in the truck. I have 10 air horns on it right now and building train horns. Ideally i want 1 big one facing all 4 sides and a 5 trumpet under the hood.

Probably cutting testh for the grill, red led eyes, building an array or probably like 5 square tubing hitches on the back for a tri ball, shitter seat and smoker for camping and backroading, cooler holder since my fucking giant cooler wont fit in the trunk, bench seat, etc. All interchangeable so i can switch it up. Speaking of skulls, I'll need to find some fox skulls for my car too. Painting one with chrome paint and mounting it on the hood would be nice, but even more so I realized that I need a holder for my navigator and a skull of a fox would be the most awesome thing to make one from.
>>

You guys know that "chrome" paint is just regular Aluminum "silver" paint in a more expensive package right?

No I didn't. And now I don't know whether to be angry at the deception or happy that I know a workaround for it.
>>

Speaking of paints, is paint necessary to protect a car from rusting or is it enough to put wax straight on the metal? Having patchy paintwork would be a pretty big intended feature of my project car, but I couldn't leave it like that if it meant losing the entire car to rust.
>>

>>

What I meant was that I'd like to have parches without paint on the car, with the metal showing through. Some kind of transparent wax on top of the holes in paint would be needed for keeping them from rusting, but would the wax without any kind of paint be enough?

Nah, u tear shit up less if u cannot go mudding. That being said a 4x4 crown vic limo will be my daily soon.

Got the limbo limped out to work today and stole another carb from dad. Slow day and got her purring like a kitten so im gonna try and haul ass to town for nore parts and a breather.

Sadly loaning it to a buddy for 2 weeks for a wedding so project is kill till then. But he is a mechanic and pretty handy. Will be beneficial enough if he fixes the flame thrower.

When he comes back im stealing op's idea for that pipe roll cage. Got a 20 foot 6 inch pipe for bumpers. Might cut a hole in the fenders and by the trunk. Fortunatly i have room to run sizable pioe to the frame and still have hood and trunk funcional.

Have like $1,000 in chicken lights i was gonna pimp my dump truck with. This bitch gonna glow like the mutherfucking sun.

You need a pre-1990's vehicle so it has no "computer" which easily fry.

Bulk it up like professional storm-chasers: steel plates, bullet-proof glass, heftier engine, etc.

Paint the entire thing with spray-on bed liner (Rhino Liner).

Sorry but that's a no-no. Can't get it trough inspection.
My ducato RV has lost a corner of the (plastic) bumper and it needed to be covered. The previous owner solved it by taking a plastic jug and screwed it on the steel support where the bumper used to be. It looked ghetto as hell but passed. I drove through grass (yes, on a field, just long grass) and the jug broke into pieces as UV had made the plastic brittle.
Anyway. It worked and the look was "junk" so go for something that works but looks like scrap, not crap. >>1160903

Sounds like you're going for mad Max's car and not just a general movie style car.

I'd suggest the largest loud speakers you can get you hands on. Attach them to the trunk door, then weld a henge where the latch is. Toss some actuators at it to make it flip open automatically. Apply tire tread to speakers for added effect.

No, I'm looking for the same genre rather than replicating the car itself. I definitely don't have what it takes to modify a Mazda into Ford Falcon in a way that would be legally acceptable here. :)

Here's one wild idea for the rear of the car in case the pipes don't get accepted: A box, or at least a taut tarp from the end of the roof to the end of the car, similar to what you occasionally see in pickup trucks. Not as good as the pipes (and I'd probably not make it this square), but still a good backup suggestion in case the pipes get rejected.

I've ran into an unexpected dilemma with my car. While it's in near perfect condition regarding all the pieces I'm going to modify anyway, it somewhat needs a repair operation that could cost more than the car itself.

As attached as I've grown to my car, it might be better to sell it to someone who just wants a normal summer car and to buy myself a "worse" for my tuning project. Older more angular cars would be easier to do bodywork with in general, but considering I still know next to nothing about different cars technical sides and could end up buying an even worse repair timebomb, I really don't know what to do. What do you think?

Convert to RWD again like its predecessors, use the exhaust chanel and create side pipes for exhaust running along side skirts. Remove all unnecessary weight. Aircon, rear seats, full size spare, whatever. If you have OBD2 (quick google gives me mixed answers on your model and year) tuning is an option, get a cheap scanner and flash a tune you find on the internet / make one yourself with a buddy in the passenger seat. Also new tyres stiffer suspension sports brakes for better handling.
>>
>>1161502
Sorry but that is the case with old cars. When the age exceeds 20 years it will certainly need some repairs if it cheap. Getting a good one will be up to luck if you haven't got the experience.

If your car will not traverse horrible roads, bottoms out over deep potholes or gets stuck in the mud, then you will have a problem. I think the English term is valve shaft rubbers. It smokes a lot when starting up, and while it's not a big problem to me, it could apparently cause more serious and expensive damage along the way if left unfixed.

Also, here's a third revision of the trunk pipes: Apparently telescoping pipes would be pretty much guaranteed to rust stuck in the Finnish conditions, so I came up with a design that doesn't need them. What if the rear end of the pipes was held down by two loops instead, so when the trunk opens the pipes would slide through them, ending up horizontal on top of the hood when it's open?

That was my original idea too, but this is how far the edge of the roof is from the edge of the trunk. As the trunk opens it moves forward to the top of the lower edge of the rear window too, so running the pipes past it from that point would require too much sideways displacement.

I've heard the front spoilers could be mandatory for pedestrian safety, so here's my idea to replace it with a metal grill. With tire skin bumpers and a custom hood, this should make the front of the car pretty much perfect.

Thanks for the tips! Changing the suspensions sounds difficult, but apparently it's legal to lift this car 51mm so I'm definitely going to look into doing it. Apparently it's also possible to fit some bigger tires in it, although I haven't gotten a good answer to how larger front wheels fit to turn in the same holes as the smaller ones.

Speaking of wheels, one cool-looking thing my car is too small for would be an extra set of rear wheels like in some trucks. They wouldn't even need to be really usable, as just like unloaded trucks they could be held off the road in the upper position.

Visible parts of the engine are always cool, so I'll ask if I can have a gas tank showing through the hood. Might not fit with the fully customized hood, but I'll ask about this as a backup plan. And the best case scenario is that I could weld it to the side of the car, giving it some much needed customization.

I just realized that some pipes partially visible around the trunk would give it way better appearance, be relatively easy to make, AND fit together with whatever I end up doing over the trunk! I've always liked fins on cars, and this would at least give it some of the same appearance while fitting in with the rest of the car.

Venttiilivarren kumit?
As your car is a project car, and will be one for a long time I'd just suggest you to fix the fucker. Check out forums where you will get help. The local mazda club is mazdago.net but unfortunately the area for your model is members-only. But there are other forums, bigger, better and more people. Hang out on those and start fixing your car.
I was earlier of the opinion that you will need to fix any old used car so it doesn't really matter which you get. Older cars have more space under the hood so its nice.
But if you really want to have a more boxy one get an old mercedes benz diesel. They sound great, are well built and have tons of space under the hood. But as with every other old car, there will be shit that needs fixing. But the local MB-forum is big and extremely helpful.

I have four cars:
Toyota Corolla -99
Fiat Ducato -99
Fiat Talento (Ducato RV) -91
Mercedes benz W124 -88
+Wife's car.
Which means I have been hanging out on car forums quite a lot.

Exactly. I have a friend who knows a lot about cars, and he says there's a trick to replacing them without having to remove the entire cover. Apparently that's something amateur mechanics can do for a reasonable prize, but it requires an air compressor.

I was surprised to see how cheap some Mercedes Benzes were, but with my repair skills there's no engine problem too minor for me to get stuck with (except adding liquids, I guess).

My friend has been searching for larger tires for my wheels already, but unfortunately it's apparently hard to find larger tires for their size.

I just finished my first actual fixes to the car - gluing broken rear lights together, and making these grills for the door speakers.

Other than that, now I seem to be in real trouble with my project. Apparently there's no way whatsoever to rustproof a car without painting it, and all the metal patchwork and some of the external pipes really relied on metal being visible. At least I could still make the roof pipes from stainless steel as long as I make just the mounting parts for it out of painted iron, but other than that things like >>1163006 appear to be impossible.

In lieu of patchy paintwork, I'm now considering something like desert camo paint. Being patchy by design, it would be easy to patch up again after needing to grind some of it off for fixes, but I'd still prefer shiny metal wherever it was possible. What do you think?
>>
>>1163492

>>
>>1163501

I know. It doesn't look like much, but I won't start actually tearing down the interior before I'm sure it's legal to do enough of the modifications to be worth it.
>>
>>1163509
They dont give a shit about the interior. I have a car that has almost all the plastics removed and it passed inspection. Or actually it didn't but it wasn't because of the interior...
>>
>>1163524

Presumably they do, due to crash safety. The reason for not starting modifications already however is that I still need to ask how much modifications I can do to the car in general. I have never seen anything like this on the Finnish roads, so if that's because of everything fun is simply illegal, I will sell the car because there wouldn't be anything worth doing with it.
>>
>>1160368

Cool idea. I want to do something like that too. If it were possible to get the thing roadworthy, my grandfather has a well weathered, but still solid, 65 Mustang that he used for parts.
>>
>>1163568
why does it need to be street legal?
>>
>>1163776

A car that you can't drive on public roads would be worthless to me.

I just visited vehicle inspection office to ask about my plans, but they had never even heard of anyone planning something like this so they couldn't say anything beyond "I can't tell why it's wrong but I can't approve it either." At least I got the direct number to Trafi, so hopefully they'll know more.

When you do actually put on all the mad max bits, you're probably going to be a lot heavier than when you started. And already slow car is going to become even slower. Its a fun project idea but I wouldn't make it your daily... Its probably outside your budget, but buying an already roached beater for this purpose would be easier in many ways, and you can strip the interior of all electronics, seats, carpet, lights, and leave a single seat with a 5 point harness because mad max didn't have no bangin woofers m8. Weight is an issue. Strip what you don't absolutely need (and for aesthetics) and when you add to, try and use lighter-weight materials where possible.

Engine and brake system upgrades are also desirable if you really go all-in. You really have to think of the overall effect you're having on the system and upgrading accordingly.
>>
>>1174782
I'd say forget the idea of it being used as a daily.
For starters it's going to take ages to make it really good. Doing serious work on a car is slow and you'll need another car anyway during.
This is the main reason I have been extremely sceptical about this project. Sound like a kid's project to me.
