look at the hole, its lined with brick/stone.
don't dig any deeper than maybe 2/3 your own height without proper shoring. that way not if but when the wall collapses you might still be able to shout for help rather than be buried alive and die within maybe a few minutes. serious fucking business. on the other hand rabid wolves might eat your face if you can't get your arms out.

a vacuum truck is the only way to go. jet streams of water spray into the ground eroding it while a vacuum on a boom sucks everything out of the hole.

the only instance i've seen this done for is installing sonotubes for streetlight cement bases that are 6 feet deep or so.

I'd say it takes about 15-20 minutes to get down 10 feet, it's going to take longer depending on how much rock is in the soil, but it's a very strong vacuum.

Not really. Vacuum trucks are pretty fast, so less cost per hour.

On a related note, a few years ago I dug some fence post holes with a digging bar and shop vac. It went pretty quickly.

I work at a refinery, 100s of miles of piping. Vac truck is the norm for buried pipe. They can cover about 10ft of 8in pipe buried at 4ft over an 8 hour day. This includes an hour at the start and end of day to travel(and fuck around/permit the work) and 45 minutes for lunch. But the scale is graded, if 4ft takes a half hour, 5 ft will take over an hour(maybe, depends on composition), the deeper it is the more time it takes per foot. These holes are over 3 feet wide.

Also, over 4 feet is considered to be a confined space by osha. The big risk is asphyxiation, either by lack of oxygen or by a heavy gas coming from the soil. Both can be meidated by forcing fresh air into the bottom of the hole, but keep an oxygen monitor with you regardless.

Shoring is important, unless youre digging into straight clay the hole will eventually collapse, and 6 inches of wet soil on your chest is enough to make it impossible to breathe. You can get a long way with some steel panels and back hoe for that.

Holes are surprisingly dangerous. You can even find pockets of h2s in earth that shallow. There's one story of someone digging up power line and at 7 feet he hit a pocket of it and before his buddy could get a rope for him to climb put he was dead.
