I'm making a giant swing and I am wondering whether clamps or hand-swaged sleeves are safer, unfortunately I can't get them machine crimped. Or should I just use rope/chain?

The knuckle type are stronger, and they are used on OSHA mandated safety cables that go around commercial buildings during construction.
They can hold up to 5000lbs of side impact force. If that doesn't hold your swing then you have more important things to worry about. Such as pic related.

Are you referring to these?
>>
>>1157148
Yes, that's them.
Truthfully the saddle style like in OPs pic would work as well, they are just not as strong, but can still hold quite a bit.

>whether clamps or hand-swaged sleeves are safer

If you use clamps, be sure to use the correct size for the cable you are using.
The cable should be a tight fit if pushing it into the saddle by hand.

Swaging sleeves can be compressed adequately with just a hammer and anvil of some sort.

I have swaging tools for four sizes of wire rope I commonly use but did it with a hammer and piece of railroad iron before I got the crimpers.

Thimbles and sleeves look much nicer.

you'll be fine. i use those on the cable for the hand crank that raises and lowers my sprayer boom. weight is about 1200lbs and it's held up just fine over the years
>>
>>1157135
I only use two of those and hold around 2000lbs across 2 cables if it matters

it bounces frequently and haven't had any issues

What size wire rope do you guys use?
>>
>>1157242
I'd say 3/16ths pretty sure

we tried 1/16th but it was too thin and we moved to what the store had of a "bigger size" because I was like what the fuck that is way too small
I think 3/16th was the size up from that, I don't think it is 1/8th definitely not 1/4th
(talking in shitty inches of course)
pretty sure they didn't have 1/8th so it was 3/16ths
>>
>>1157242
also what are you using for people to grab?

I usually just use rope or chain for swings, because then it is easier to hold with your hands

how big is your giant swing? I'd use rope against the tree too or put something rubber to protect it

and then cable for the length and cheapness then rope or chain for where peoples hands go

just my thought, holding cable with hands is fucking no
>>
>>1157242
sprayer is 2500lb aircraft cable.
>>
>>1157247
I was planning to insert the bottom 2 feet of the cables into PVC pipes to act as handles or just using chains. It will be suspended from a 20 foot high frame, i'm just worried that the wire rope might slip out once I really get into the swinging.

Eternal reminder why having the proper strength ubolts is important.

It won't slip I've never seen it slip from those
I've seen it snap from too heavy of loads before it slips out

make sure they're the right size as someone else said

and protect your tree branch from the cable! that shit will rip it apart
>>
>>1157242
I used to work in a construction company that always works on heights. They always use 3/8 and saddle-like clamps like in the OP. If I recall correctly, they're good for 6+ metric tons
>>
>>1157135
I operate giant swings and if you can get access to a crimper it will work much safer. just find an engineering shop and get them to do it to your steel cable.
>>
>>1157464
If he gets the shit with plastic coating it could slip. Solution is to either not get plastic coated cable or trim the plastic off where you're gonna clamp it
>>
>>1157135
I've seen giant swings with the vertical cable hanging from a horizontal cable at tension between two tree trunks - I think this is safer than hanging it from a branch, not least because you can get more distance between the person swinging and the tree trunk. Also probably best to go around the tree trunks a couple of times with each end to get some nice hold
>>
>>1157135
Just tie a bowline knot in it and you'll be alright
>>
I did this with a tire swing in my back yard about 25' 2 years ago and have had no problems with it.

How many clamps did you put on each loop?
