Make it big enough to climb inside. Tie off if it's deeper than 6ft.
Safety first.

Local community art centers will often have wheel throwing classes for beginners, so check around. Community colleges with enrichment classes are also a good opportunity.
At home, pots can still be constructed with coils, pinching, and slabs, but you'll still need access to a kiln to fire them.

Get some clay it's really cheap. There a different types of clay. If you want to use it on a wheel get the one without chamotte. But I recoment you take one with chamotte. It's more stable and you can use it easely. You also need an oven that can reach 950 °C. Thats the temerature for the first branding. If you wanna use glazes too you need an oven that can reach 1200 °C. I recomment getting a book that covers the basics and start from there. You an easely build your own oven if you want. There is some glazing called 'Raku' its easy to build your own raku-oven look it up on youtube.
pic is an example of raku. Notice the cracking effect it's called craquelé.
You can get clay out of nature and process it.
Glazes are the most expensive part.
You can do a lot without a wheel, even round things.
If you have more questions please ask more specific. I do pottery myself for over 10 years now.
