Cool. So what about a gearshift knob with his favourite [something] embossed/carved/embedded into the top, or ? A wooden trunk he can keep in his trunk (yo dawg) to keep his go-to toolkit in, or perhaps shit like jumper leads, road flares etc? A clock with his favourite car/tool/beer manufacturer carved and/or inlaid into its face for his workshop? Its his 50th, you may as well go hard and all of these should be easy enough if you have the chops that you claim.

Dad is a mechanic. Lifted trucks or a big belly is a bitch. He build few sets of deck stairs 2 and 3 high. Ablut 3 or 4 feet wide. Sturdy enough 2 peoole can monkey around on them but you can still throw them around. Use treated 2x6. Consider sticky sandpaper for footing.
Or maybe a backer board if he only rolls a bottom box. Pegboard to hand some wrenches on and coark for notes and reminders.

And a few wood tops for beating on shit gently or tiney wall hanger wood bolt bins. Never enough room for the small shit.
