I need some bulletproof glass for an upcoming project. Someone suggested using security film but I think that lexan would do a better job. Can I get some other suggestions?
>>
No glass is bullet proof. Define your specs and we'll discuss it.

I'm reasonable. A glass able to stop a several .44s or a rifle round or two is what I'm looking for.
>>
>>1155035
3" thick polycarbonate
>>
>>1155035
'Several' .44's is reasonably doable. 'A rifle round or two' is vague and unworkable. What caliber rifle?
>>
>>1155037
Would get its ass handed to it by 7.62 nato.
>>
>>1155038
I'll say a .223 (a .308 is probably pushing it)
Really the average round a civilian would use. (Not .22 of course)
>>
>>1155041
12" thick polycarbonate then smart guy .
>>
>>1155046
>Maybe something besides polycarbonate...?
>>
>>1155042
Ok, NIJ didn't test .223 in 0108.01 but luckily the DOD did in ATPD 2352. Regretfully they tested it against soda-lime and glass-ceramic plates. Extrapolating the performance of materials to common poly-carbonate to exclude expensive exotic laminates if you went straight up poly <> film <> poly you'd be looking at 4" - 4.5" min. to stop a FMJ .223. Any AP or steel core round would go right through. Multiple shots would be a gamble. Anything grouped within a couple inches would probably penetrate.

(this is a course guestimate. testing is needed.)
>>
>>1155050
Oh, forgot to mention distance from the rifle to the target plays a huge role. My estimate is based off ~5m.
>>
>>1155050
Hmmm...So you think that using film and polycarbonate together would be the best bet?
(That, of course, assumes that polycarbonate acts similar to tempered glass which isn't an unreasonable assumption.)
>>
>>1155056
Best bet? Hell no. Aluminium oxynitride at 1.5" thick can stop a non-ap .50 cal but you're on 4donger's /diy/ so I assume you don't coin to drop on it. Poly is cheap and available and it's something you can laminate up yourself to a thickness that could do what you want it to do.

The film is just there to hold the substrate together after impact. I'm not sure the optima ratio of film to poly thickness is. That's another thing to test out. My bet would be 1/4" to 1/2" poly. The center layers could be thicker maybe up to 1". Still this is all guessing.

>average round a civilian would use

I literally know 5 people who own and use a Barrett .50cal M107. (god damn they kick like a mule)

If you don't need this for redneck land, you'll probably be okay.

>.44
Ok
>Rifle round
Lol just stop
