pour a beefy as fuck foundation. slip form the first floor. use big timbers to deck the top/overhang. sheet metal roof. finish the inside.

i could do the "shell" in about 2 months by myself. maybe less if i had good tools and some equipment.
>>
>>1154950

that dinky 300 watt solar panel.

that thing is probably with in walking distance of a proper house.
>>
>>1155065
>>1155065
That looks like 2x240w

Am led bulb runs 9w, looks like they have around 12 bulbs in their house, they only would generality run 4 bulbs max at a time (they are all on for the picture). That would mean a consumption of only about 150wh/day(including phone charging) . Even with losses even 2 good sun hours would be sufficient.

It's not like they are running a computer or electric stove in there, they likely use gas for everything even water heating

Assuming they only have around 3 hours of power usage before they cut it off for the night, that's more than enough
>>
>>1155059
theoretically, you can do it with just a truck and some clever block and tackle rigging. you start building the tower on its side and tilt it to standing. then you finish the top part.

i think you get around ~150 sqft. but can probably get more if you build a bigger overhang.
>>
>>1155076
>Am led bulb runs 9w
those bulbs in the picture are using much more than 9 watts a piece
>>
>>1155112
You'd be surprised. If this thread is still around tomorrow night (no reason it shouldn't) I'll take a picture of my house with my 9w led bulbs on

>>
>>1154521

>>
>>1154951
If you need to rebuild that structure every ten years than you need to quit carpentry.
Unless of course you are confusing "rebuilding" with "routine maintenance" in which case you should quit carpentry.
If your post is any inclination of your intelligence than I would say you would be best suited shitposting about things you know nothing about, or making extreme exaggerations on an anonymous Mongolian basket weaving forum.
>>
>>1155270
That looks like a beach tower on a barrier island, those need to be rebuilt around once a decade because of how the beach reforms itself

Judging by the foliage it has to be a beach, and by the fact only quick growing young plants are shown it likely is a barrier island

I'm not making some snide comment, I'm saying it is quite affordable at $13k for something you absolutely need to rebuild every decade because the shifting shape of the island

The one in the OP isn't slipfrom for the most part, but it also isn't standard. The stones are not strictly facade like in slipform walls. You can tell that by how thick they are at the corners.

Thanks anon.

I'm partial to 'tower'/'lookout' houses. Having to do downstairs to use the bathroom would get tiring...

The USGS also has older plans for their lookout towers. Some of which are available to rent if you wan to try living in one for a week or two.

I plan on building something similar to pic related with a detached barn for a garage/workshop.
>>
>>1155360
>The stones are not strictly facade like in slipform walls

the stone in slipform walls are not facade, they are very much a load bearing part of the structure.
>>
>>1155588
They are mostly facade. The face is the only side with the stone. Sometimes it is just slapped against an actual wall and is super thin.

>>1155625
>The face is the only side with the stone.

that doesn't matter. look at your pic. at least 30% of the volume of that wall is stone, and the stone is supporting the weight of the roof and whatever else.

slapping stone against a wall that is already in place is not slipforming, that is what you would call facia masonry.

there is a big difference.

>>1155635
2 months is actually a long time. you underestimate how much you can get done when you work from sun up to sun down. pic relateds can get built in a single day by a crew of 8 and are of the same kind of stick frame construction you have in your home, albeit with less fancy siding.

Raspberry pi's aren't very efficient, in fact tablets are much more efficient. I've got a 10.1' tablet and it can be charged with only a 1amp 5v usb power supply, so that means it consumes less than 5w when running, and it includes display and a bunch more that would be random peripherals (also it's a lot faster than a raspi)

the question was how much cost in material to build this tower not build it on a barrier island or beach area. it could be built in the middle of a iowa corn field if someone wanted to. no worries of shifting islands there and it wouldn't need to be re-built every ten years - maybe just re-painted.
>>
>>1154675
>>1155273
nope... do image search. it says its ute mountain fire watch tower in utah. no where near a beach or barrier island. sorry.

also a pinterest with a shit ton of fire lookout towers pictured
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/248964685624909783/

"Ute Mountain Lookout was the first and is the last standing fire tower with living quarters above ground in Utah. The tower offers a panoramic view of the Ashley National Forest and surrounding area. From it, an observer can see over 360 square miles of virtually uninhabited northeastern slope of the Uinta Mountain Range.

The lookout is no longer used to spot fires. Airplanes and other technology are now important for fire detection. Due to the tower's role in forest history and the efforts of those who preserved and restored it for operational use, Ute Lookout is on the National Register of Historic Places. Today it stands as a monument to a part of our cultural heritage—the early years of fire prevention and detection of the Forest Service. Access to the top of the Tower is closed for renovation, but the site is still accessible for ground observation."

https://www.google.com/amp/minnesota.cbslocal.com/2012/05/29/good-question-why-dont-you-see-lightning-rods-on-homes/amp/

Apparently California gets 5 thunderstorms a year, I would assume lightning rods aren't too common there. I live in MN, just bought a house and no one pointed one out during inspection, I honestly did not think to ask because it never gets brought up. I don't know if I've actually seen one on a house, though I have heard of them when I was younger.

These fire watch towers are cheap and quite comfy to live in, but if it were me is get rid of the glass doors of the ground floor and get some curtains for the other floor.

>Mandatory lightning rods

Where the fuck do you live? I have never ever seen a house with a lightning rod on it.
>>
>>1160784
>All that glass
>In a cold as fuck area

Just fucking why. What is the hard on for fucking glass these days? Every new house I go into has massive windows and ranch sliders wherever they can squeeze them in and then people moan about how expensive their heating bill is.
>>
>>1161441
it is le minimal chic modern star trek iphone style

can't wait until these morons have to foot the bill for refurbishing all that glass regularly.
>>
>>1161476
>Get a decent wind going
>Wind picks up a bunch of small rocks
>Rip 10k worth of glass

Kek. 'Architectural' house cucks make me laugh. A small list of retarded shit done by architects that boomers eat up because they are fucking retarded.

>No underfloor or roof spaces because fuck wanting to run anything new or fix anything without ripping off the ceiling boards
>High pitch roofs and fuckloads of glass making heating really expensive
>Random exterior angles and corners that are a nightmare to keep waterproof
>Clusterfuck of different exterior claddings
>Lol it's all white
>Stupid shit like interior gutters and downpipes inside walls because 'muh aesthetics'
>Still looks terrible to anyone with an actual sense of aesthetics

Just why.
>>
>>1155838
Actually, that's not correct.
>>
>>1161610
>Gutters and downpipes inside walls

>was going to move to New Zealand, the country where all the rich liberals are white-flighting to in order to escape the shithole they turned the US into

Wow, good plan.
>>
>>1162718
NZfag here. Our own liberals are doing a pretty good job of fucking this country up. Please don't send any more over.
>>
>>1161610
>gutters and downpipes inside walls
that's actually a really good fuckin idea
>>
>>1162718
what is different from a liberal in the US and a liberal in NZ?
>>
>>1162723
Are you joking? I can't tell. I feel like I shouldn't have to point out why it's retarded.
>>
>>1162725
One is in the US, the other is in NZ and neither country wants both so they are stuck with one each.
>>
>>1162743
>pipes in the walls
>retarded

It is not retarded, it is the typical salty engineeringfags bashing at architects and their designs, this thread is full of it so just read between the lines when someone calls something that is done everywhere retarded
>>
>>1162772
Architect detected.
>>
>>1162772
> just read between the lines when someone calls something that is done everywhere retarded
People voluntarily smoke an addictive plant that gives you barely any noticeable effect during use, and is a known carcinogen everywhere

Just because it is done everywhere doesn't mean it's not retarded
>>
>>1163069
>smoking is retarded
Go ahead and call everyone retarded, just proved my point
>>
>>1163070
In what way is smoking not retarded

I'm not saying it should be outlawed, but name one legitimate reason smoking isn't retarded

>Inb4 the cliches:
"But it tastes good"
>So does lead paint and antifreeze, but I wouldn't put those in my body either
"It helps me relax"
>It actually increases background cortisol levels, making you generally become more stressed, and when you smoke your brain releases dopamine, making you feel accomplished for having smoked, which temporarily reduces those already increased cortisol levels, it doesn't relax you, it makes you dependent so the only time you can relax is when you smoke
>>
>>1154667
In the US the only buildings I've ever seen with lightning rods are churches and skyscrapers
>>
>>1163268
To be fair, modern day lightning rods are quite unnoticeable.
>>
>>1163079
Kek, guys watch out, someone thinks we are all retarded
>>
>>1163278
Where do you think you are?
This is 4chan not a smokers forum.

Believe it or not, you are the minority.
>>
>>1163298
Let's call everyone a retard because they are a miniority here, on 4chan! Best logic

New anon here, spotted the b8.
Also,
>Pipes and gutters in the walls
are a great idea until they clog, leak or need other maintenance
Engineerfags get salty because archifaggots care more about how artsy the end product is rather than it's practicality, service life, or the end product for the customer.
Thereby building a shitty building that gets problems every rainy season/toilet flush that the engineer gets blamed for when something doesn't work right, while the architect is praised for their "modern vision"

>>1163069
>>1163079
>>1163298
>>1163309
Anon, I'm disappointed in you. If you are an engineer you should have been in college long enough to at least recognize b8, and if not, you should have taken enough shit by this point to.
Pic related.

You should have seen the bait as far back as >>1162772
or at least >>1163070
>>
>>1163335
>artsy
>modern vision

kek, please don't go around accusing people for using words you don't even understand, also, that is not even how it works

>building a shitty building that gets problems every rainy season/toilet flush that the engineer gets blamed for when something doesn't work right

because that is an engineering failure obviously, the architect is not responsible for engineer fuck ups, that is why they are two different jobs

cmon, this whole thread is just Salty Engineers General, don't talk to me like this whole thread isn't just a big fucking bait, you can smell it all the way from the OP...

engineers, just do your fucking jobs and let architects handle how "artsy" it needs or doesn't need to be
>>
>>1163355
nice b8 m8, but that doesn't work on me.
My first post was an explainer for any morons other than you who wander by.
This thread was actually pretty alright until you and tard anon wandered along.

>salty
>ignoring the main argument.
>"you don't understand what x means, kid"

B8 confirmed.
4/10, tricked a gullible newfag, but pretty fucking obvious.
Stop shitting up the thread and try harder next time.
>>
>>1163361
>A thread that literally says "Is pic related retarded?"

But fuck off and do it on /b/. You're just annoying, and it's not even summer yet.

General Framing is making the wooden structures for building. People don't usually frame things just as a hobby; it's what construction workers do. If you want to get a job doing carpentry, look for apprenticeships via google. In the US, the state will have a list of all registered apprenticeships, and you can also check out your local community college for either programs at the school or contact info for programs run by the union or a company.

If you want to just do it for fun, there are many ways to start. You'll only need a few hand tools at first, so space and money shouldn't be a problem. A good way might be to think of a simple project that sounds fun, and then buy the materials and tools for that. With every project you can accumulate a few more tools, and your skill will increase along with your tool set.

Although this guy is an actor who has a whole schtick, the ideas in this video might be a good place to start.
