What multimeter does /diy/ use around the clock? The harbor freight one I have been using has been doing somewhat well, but is inaccurate and has a cracked case. Are the flukes as good as people say, or are they just shills?
>>
they are good but really only worth it if it's making you money and even then it's very likely some fuck will eventually steal it. i mainly use Klein, work good and are priced reasonably
>>
>>1152920
This.
I actually personally use a bunch of cheap shitty jameco/rshack ones, but for work we have a Klein.
>>
Currently a €15 aldi DMM because they had it on sale and I needed one fast. Planning on getting a Brymen BM235 in the near future.
Fluke seems like the gold standard but overpriced as fuck.

fluke t5.600. Does everything you need but not too fancy or expensive. I work around electricity everyday so I want a brand good enough I can trust. Great all around no nonsense meter
>>

I have a Uni-T 890D and I'm quite happy with it. I opened it up and put a piece of tape over the beeper, which made it a lot more tolerable.
>>
anyone know of an accurate clamp meter with a max amp function?
Got burned by a cheapo unit on amazon. its accurate and actually pretty nice but the hold function does not record max amps, just whatever it is when you press it. Testing motor surge.
>>
>>1153011
>but the hold function does not record max amps, just whatever it is when you press it.
That is what the hold function is for. You didn't get burned, you're just mentally deficient.

I got a $30ish multimeter that has serial out from banggood. So far it's done everything I've wanted. I also had an $8 autoranging pocket meter that I used all the time, until I was a dumbass and switched modes while it was attached to a 110v available source. It was so tiny and easy, that I used it way more, right up until I killed it.

Pic related, a similar meter to the one I killed

Anyone try out a Mooshimeter? I encounter some situations where my meter needs to be an an odd spot while on min/max recording, but if I had the Mooshimeter I could watch live data graphing while driving. Needs to be very accurate and have fairly powerful bluetooth signal though. I can't find any reviews from anyone I would trust. I know there's the Fluke with detachable face but some of my coworkers have had bad luck with it.

I strongly recommend pic related. Been using for several months still no problems.

Pros: measures capacitance
Auto range
Beeps
Auto shutdowns if forgot on
Has micro ammeter
Measures temp. (Probe included)
10x Cheaper than Fluke
Cons:
No blacklight
>>
Harbor freight free/$4 is great for an auto mechanic's mobil box. Throw it in there, if it breaks no biggie. It'll let you check batteries, alternators, and continuity which is usually more than enough for most situations. I never came across something on a car i couldn't diagnose with it. But the tips break if you look at them. I made my own set that allows me to switch between probes and gator clips.

I have a $60 harbor freight, it's alright, but it acts a little weird some times. Great for guitar amp repair and effects building, among other random electronic fuckery. Used the 25% off coupon so I got it for $45, and for that price it's great. Eventually if I start making more money off this hobby I'll buy a better one.

I've had the luxury of using flukes several times, great meters, but you pay for it.

forgot to add the amp metter you can replace with different heads like a fan to get CFM plus Fluke heads fit on the UEi's so you can switch alot of shit out

I'm looking to buy a multimeter for electronics projects (example: Raspberry Pi stuff). All I need to do is: measure current, measure voltage, and I heard some multimeters can measure forward voltage of diodes (like LEDs). I'd like for it to be <$20, and on Amazon. Any recommendations?
>>
>>1154496
Literally any cheap DMM like OP's pic will work, they're around $3 at the cheapest from China, you shouldn't have trouble looking for one on Amazon. I've got a couple and they definitely do the job for low-level electronics. The diode mode shows the voltage drop in mV, I'm getting a 585mV reading across a diode right now. They don't do capacitance or continuity, but they can do something with transistors, not like I've ever done that.

For quick measurements, I mostly use my handhelds.
Fluke 87V, Agilent U1272A and Keysight U1282A

For datalogging and such, I use benchtops.
Agilent 34401A and 3457A

>>1154361

>>1155728
Most people I have bumped into assume digital = better, which is never an automatic truth. In my experience analogue meters settle on the value a lot faster, can still measure voltage and current if the batteries die (has saved my ass more than once when I was in bumfuck nowhere with flat batteries), and tend to drop a little more power into the circuit under test, ensuring transients in the system do not alter the reading. Inducted loads are also a problem with digital meters, but these fly right under the radar of an analogue. View angle tends to be better as well, you can use the parallax mirror from any angle, where an LCD might have a narrower field of view.

I have a variety of cheap digi meters but if I'm at my bench, this tends to be the one I jump for.

>>1155836

I have some rinky-dink chinesium shitbox that looks and feels like it came out of a fucking happy meal.

>>
>>1152920
I bought a 5 dollar Multimeter and was stolen after the second use, I fucking hate people stealing my tools.
>>
>>1156347
All current clamps have some "slip" to them. If your clamp is specific to your meter, they'll usually be compensated correctly so it's fairly accurate, but the generic, non-digital amp clamps will be either a little off at full range or way off at low range.
Just something to be aware of, not really a big deal for a home gamer.
>>
I have this ingco 600v meter.

Cost me 40 coconuts (a third the price of a 750ml Johnny Walker black)

/diy/ had me shitting my pants the first time I tested mainline 230v. After I realized these cucks on this board spread wives tales more frequently than your grandmother I have tested many 400v transfer switches with it and I have had no issue.

/diy/ would say you need a 1000v fluke to test 110v. That's not the case. My ingco multimeter has some of the worst engrish I have ever seen and it is the cheapest multimeter I have ever seen but it works fucking fine.

>everyone ITT is a sparky

I have some random chinese one. All I use it for is really for the continuity and rough levels like 16 ohms across earphones etc.sort of general stuff the average person should at least have access to. I did stick it across UK 240V though to check the socket was wired correctly and it worked fine though, but further than that I'd hire a guy who knows their shit.

Eevblog regulars seem to like it okay, but I don't think it can be calibrated and wireless is never reliable.
