I finally bought a welding equipment and a Mazda 323 to fulfill my lifelong dream of making a car that looks as much like something out of Mad Max as legally possible.

Since the car ought to look like something rigged together from scavenged materials I'm not worried about the end result looking like crap, but the street legal part is what limits my tuning the most. Especially in Finland where the vehicle inspections are notoriously anal about anything unusual in general. Any kind of spikes or sharp edges that could potentially hurt pedestrians are obviously out of the question, and any drastic bodywork that may lower the crash safety of the car is bound to have some trouble too.

Still, this seems like a project /diy/ could be interested in, so if you have any ideas on what I could do with the car it would definitely be interesting to hear them. Floodlights on the roof, random metal patches welded on the sides and covering the bumpers with rubber from skinned car tires are some things I'm definitely going to do, and customizing the hood or trunk cover shouldn't be too risky either.

Got ideas? And what do you think about the project in general?

replace all body panels with scraps

the more patchwork the better, ideally the whole thing is just niggerwelded together with zero original panels

i imagine touching any of the actual mechanics would be no good if you are going for cosmetics

Well if your going for form over function dont forget foam and latex can look sharp and pointy.
>>
>>1151090

>the more patchwork the better, ideally the whole thing is just niggerwelded together with zero original panels

This is what I'm planning too. Patching the existing shape of the body (and making sure the edges of the welded plates are smooth enough) shouldn't be too hard to get accepted.

>i imagine touching any of the actual mechanics would be no good if you are going for cosmetics

Indeed. That's why I bought a relatively reliable car. It would be nice to install extra dashboard gauges though, if I had a clue how to do it.

>>1151117

I've thought about foam and latex too, but I think it's better to make everything out of hard enough materials that they feel solid when touched.

Thanks for the feedback! Keep the ideas coming.

what the fuck is a vehicle inspection?

move to a country that doesn't regulate your behicles

Fake hoot pipes, cut up an old lawnmower hood for a hood scoop and put light bar in it. Junk ass old steel wheeks that are wide. Flat black spray paint. Tint the windows. If theyre are rock wuarries around u can get junk metak screen Nd replace your grill and shit. Countlass thousands of other ideas. Im fucking doing the same one day soon. Post progress.

Easy af. What guages u need. Or oeder a triple guage cluster. Populer in america here. Hell i may have one but shipoing would kill u. They cheap. I got like 4 cars with them cause factory guages in a 43 year old csr shit out and its easier to bold 3 new ones in than replace them. My samefagging mad max project
>>
Ride eternal, die historic, OP. Would love to this myself one day. Sucks being a poor fag.
>>
>>1151084
This seems like a good time to ask this question. If I wanted to make a Varg-mobile would stripping the back seats out of an old car make it light enough to be substantially faster.
>>
if you want to pass EU Inspections, build bullbars and other protruding parts out of PVC pipe.

Use spray on bedliner for texture.
For heavy rust texture, mix "red oxide" primer with sand. Then paint other colors over it by hand.

For actual surface rust, just hit steel with a wire brush on an angle grinder, wait for the area to rust, then apply 80:20 Linseed oil and Paint thinner with a paintbrush to seal the rust.

I'm not sure you can add anything to the windows though and the 323 has big looking glass. It might end up looking extremely forced.
Ask the inspection guy first before doing anything.
>>
>>1151289
A back seat weighs maybe 30kgs. It won't make a noticeable difference.

gotta have a roo bar and floodlights for that authenticity.

If you want details like armor plates/hatches covering windows, but worry about inspections, maybe you can make the sections modular and removable.
Some plastic (for light weight) worked over with paint and detailing could be held flush to a nice intact side window with magnets/careful placement. Or add some hinges below the windowframe and make a removable hatch that can flip up (unto the rolled-down window frame) or flip out so you can wave menacing clubs/ whatever. This could be steel/wood/plastic as needed for design.

This could even be for the front windscreen.
Not to be used while on the road for blatant safety reasons, but you have the benefit of keeping the rain and snow out/heating or cooling in when you want.

Having a hard time finding the definitive image of a 323, not familiar with a mazda sold under that name.
>>
>>1151674
Pretty sure its 4 coil springs. Just put a new motor and hydraulic shocks on it tho.
>>
>>1151674
The blazer i mean. The vw has a giant coil spring i dont understand in front and hydraulic shocks. I think just air shocks in back. Mayn springs too? Been a few years since i looked at it.

OP here, and here's my car. I'm still making up a list of ideas so I can ask about them from a guy responsible for approving modifications, but I already shopped for some parts that ought to be safe to install. Mainly leather upholstery, in the form of used leather jackets that I'm going to skin and stitch together to make seat covers and such. I also got a piece of mesh to use to fix two missing speaker covers, and a 20 liter jerrycan to tie on the trunk.
>>
another vector:
Spare parts.
Check just how difficult it will be to do things like remove or replace the rear trunk lid or side doors.

You could have one "normal" piece, painted to match but not screwed with much and another that is heavily modified.

for example, one normal trunk lid. fine. and one chopped-up skeleton of a lid, perhaps with a built in rack to hold fuel cans and skulls. Perhaps a 'fake' hole cut into the surface with fake nitro tanks or fuel cans seeming to jut through it or some mounting brackets that support a tall radio-whip or techno-fetishist totem pole covered in skulls and tattered gray rags whipping in the air.

Perhaps a side door (not the driver?) replaced with a junk-yard door that has been cut down to nothing but a 'frame' that still engages with the body of the car and a bit of welded tube to keep it square. This could be filled in with a metal mesh, some bars or just an open hole.

When you need to get it inspected or the weather is a problem, reinstall the old door or trunk that has been sitting in the garage?

personally i feel like it would be a shame to do this to such a nice looking car
i would have looked for something with a trashed interior, ruined paint, dents, etc. because it wouldnt matter.

but shitty matte spray paint paint jobs, stencils, push bars, window grilles, roof rack and trunk rack for carrying supplies (just be careful that it doesnt hit the rear window).

i also thought about painting taillights to match car, gutting the housings, then wiring up aftermarket taillights in their place and mounting them to the outer lens of the taillight or even on the trunk lid. still legal, brake lights, turn signals, reverse, etc.

u already appear to have some foglights u could make use of, other lights that could mount to roof rack could be cool, like a light bar.

find out what size tires will squeeze in there without rubbing at full lock, cut the fenders to fit them, put some trim on the cut edges.

people also remove paint from panels, develop a patina, then stop the rusting somehow.... popular with vw guys.. look into it
>>
>>1151728
Skin it in chunks of random sheet metal. Old appliance bodies are good hammer them into rough shapes then glue them down with silicon. The drill holes for pop rivets. This keeps them from flapping/ vibrating in the wind.
Cut the heads off bolts a weld them into holes from the back of the sheets for that bolted on diesel punk look.
You can get away with a lot with paint too. Good shading can make 3d effects.
Raw hide dog chews can be boiled soft and will dry hard, good for wrapping around things like cables, hoses or even the steering wheel.
Soda bottles cut into tubes with shrink down like shrink wrap more junkyard than zip ties.

And dont forget the junkyard dashboard bobblehead made from scrap, springs and bones.

well you at least have penis inspections in your country, right? same sort of deal.
>>
Are you planning on keeping it street legal? Trafi decides obviously what the lever of street legality there is but the cops and inspectioners have their own "opinions" and they do not always know what is legal and what isn't. So I'd ask around from the nearest katsastus if you are looking for heavy modding, and trafi also. trafi has the final word but the inspection office can refuse to accept the car how ridiculously wrong they might be. The car is a -95 so it needs to obey the laws from -95, not of today. It depends on the date of registration. Obviously road safety laws are overruling.

Where are you building this? If the pics are recent you need to be far up north as in the soutwest we have already almost summer :).

Kokkola, middle Finland.

I'll post some ideas that have come up this far...

Since replacing the hood ought to be one of the safest modifications to do, I've thought about making a larger, boxy hood that looks like there's a larger than intended engine beneath it. Since the original hood is so steep this wouldn't block the visibility, although this design would make it harder to also fit in a scoop.

>>1154457

Pipes over the roof and down the back would definitely help make the car look more angular and give the rear some more detail. It would also make it easier to transport stuff on the roof so it would be practical too.

A friend also noted that the roof could be covered by a taut tarp, looking like it was used to cover whatever leaking holes in the metal itself.

>>1154459

Covering the bumper with skinned car tires ought to be a safe enough modification, but I'll still ask about it beforehand just to be safe. A wilder idea is to make fenderflares out of car tires too, although that would be a bit more dangerous suggestion.

Another thing I'll have to ask is whether some kind of spoiler under the bumper is really mandatory, since pretty much any car looks more badass without it.

Make sure the radiator still gets airflow and that the weight doesn't make it run hot. I don't know anything about cars but I've watched enough about organized crime and Mythbusters to know that you can't arbitrarily add weight and alter airflow without the engine getting angry. Bulletproofing and structural modifications imply heavier structural components and things can cascade in modern cars without a /diy/ engine bay.
