you can learn welding in three weeks if you spend all day everyday watching youtube videos and practice a whole lot
Make sure you're familiar with a tape measure and fractions. Know right where 11/16 is without having to think about it. Be able to figure out 1/32 too, but you probably won't use them much.
I've seen new welders that coud weld well but were otherwise worthless to a job shop.
Mig welding you could pick up pretty easy with some guidence on settings. You may be able to learn this in 3 weeks.
Actual welders kave a lot of technical knowledge about different materials and rods, technicalities of different welding positions, blueprint welding symbols, ect.
You won't pick that up in 3 weeks.
Are you going to be learning on the job? If you don't have an experienced welder to tell you what you're fucking up, you're going to get frustrated. I was that guy at one point in time, yelling a string of profanities after hours in the back of the shop after the goddamn electrode stuck for the 10th time in a row on our shitty lincoln tombstone.
Once you get the very basics down and can sort of weld by yourself, practice as much as possible, all angles and materials and electrodes.
Ask an experienced guy from your shop any questions that you have. Try and make sure they aren't full of shit first, nothing's worse than getting bad advice and not questioning it.
Your vertical welds will look shitty for a long time, don't sweat it and practice more.
Go to Weldingweb and the Miller forums and website. They are useful at any level of experience.

Shitty tombstone? Those fuckers last generations. They often outlive their original owners. People even restore the old round top units. (Square Idealarcs exist for stacking. The old round top protected against rain and condensation.) Either are usually excellent welders.
