When I got there the thing hadn’t been run for a year. Four thousand gallon pool – 800 in the hot tub and 3k+ in the cocktail. The theory was that a root had broken one of the jet plumbing pipes (pvc) and was losing at least two hundred gallons a day. Water level would go below the jets and slow to a crawl (evaporation).
Dug out under the slab and found good pipe but did run into a gnarly root from I was able to hack out, just because ~ refilled hole.
Next guess was this big can light at the end of the pool. Got myself a tube of 5200 boating bond and sealed that sucker up tight – this ended up being the leak.
After a good acid wash I repainted it blue – two thick coats
Replaced all the filters
Filled it and crossed my fingers when I hit the vacuum switch
Total cost: 300
Feels good man

200 gallons a day? Didn't you notice that part of the yard had turned into swamp?
wouldn't that be an easy way to locate the leak?

No way. 200 gallons a day through that covered hole? Not happening.

You always check the easy shit first.
It's like those mechanics that start changing $600 worth of parts before I come along and clean the idle control valve for a beer and that solved the problem.
