Hi /diy/ today I started restoring a coffee grinder. It was mounted on a piece of wood, which I removed before I took this shot. It's supposed to hang on the wall. While I was renovating my kitchen it was outside and the coffee inside spoiled so I wanted to take it apart and get it completely clean and usable again.

Why are you restoring it?
This is the grinder disassembled in its parts. Because it was outside it got wet, even the inside so there is rust to remove.
>>1143609
It got wet, so I disassembled it, to clean it from the inside.
These are the parts that do the grinding. They look pretty beat up. I hop the will still work, when everything is put together again.
This is a close up of the ceramic bottle that holds the beans. It says coffee in old german letters.
The cup that holds the grinded coffee is also in a really bad shape, still usable though.
The front part, before the clean up.
And thats after. I screwed it straight on my workbench and got over it with a wire brush, the ones you can mount on a drill. The whole thing is made out of cast iron.
Any advice on how to get rid of the paint I can't get to with the wire brush?
And after.
This is what it looks like now. I still need to remove some paint, then apply new paint.
Any thoughts on this /diy/?

>Crocs and flectarn trousers
Looks comfy as fuck.
Use a smaller wire brush, dremel sized to get in the nooks and crannies.

I don't own a dremel yet. good opportunity to buy one and some small wire brushes.
I have done the lid today. It has wormholes and a crack, but I think its part of its charm. I sanded it light and gave it a coat of linseed oil.
I also finished the some other little metal parts.
This is the plate where the whole thing gets mounted on. I am not sure whether to paint it white again or just finish it with a coat of linseed oil after sanding.
Here I am again not sure if I should paint the bottom white again or get a clear finish on it. I kinda like the metal look.

>They look pretty beat up
These look fine to me.
Also, was the metal part covered with paint or enamel?
>>1144103
It was paint, I would not have removed it if it was enamel, I guess. The last guy who painted it left a coffee bean in one corner and paintet right over it. Looked like a screw. I laught when I found out it was just a bean.
>These look fine to me.
That's a relief.
>>1143615
>parts that do the grinding. They look pretty beat up
That's the cone burr and ring burr. They have some wear but should work fine.
The spacing between them determines how coarse or fine the finished product is.
It all looks great OP.
You did a fine job of cleaning it up and making it look nice.
>>1144116
>That's the cone burr and ring burr.
Thanks I didn't know the english terms for that.
>They have some wear but should work fine.
Thats again a relief to hear.
>You did a fine job
Thank you, for the feedback.
Any advice on how to paint it? I was never good at painting. I think spray would be the easiest. But I really don't know I am more of a woodworker.

If you're not to worried about resale you could have someone powder coat it. But make sure you like the finish as it's rather permanent.
Any enamel paint would work but I'd prep and finish it like autobody.
Here is a close up, this is the part with the most damage.
>>1144129
>prep and finish it like autobody.
Don't know how to do that but I can look into it. Thanks.
This is the part with the least damage. Still feels sharp when I go over it with my finger.
The cup fresh out of the dishwasher. A shame that the edge looks like this.

I really like the way it looks in bare metal.
>>1144137
>A shame that the edge looks like this.
Just adds 'character' - it's probably old, it shouldn't look new.
>>1144142
Same as with the lid, I guess. I was rather talking about the corner. Well it was like that 20 years ago when it was bought.
>>1144148
>I was rather talking about the corner.
As was I. If things are used they get bumped and have scars.
As long as it's still functional and not a danger it isn't the end of it's usefulness.
I have lots of scars too. I hope to not be put down for one too many.
You have it looking great. Don't guild a lily.

Thanks.
I will be back tomorrow, I don't think I will get the painting done till then.

If you have a steady enough hand I would get a tiny can of Rustoleum solely to paint the letters. But as it is I think it looks fantastic, good job.
I don't think a powder coating would look as good, only due to the lettering. But that is personal preference.

Same poster but this is the comfiest 4chan thread I read in ages. Thanks OP.
Today was my long day at work so I didn't do much. I went to the hardware store and bought some new screws and some clear water based polyurethane paint.
I am going for the metal look, since I can't screw that up as much as I could with normal paint.
My sister and her friend are helping me painting it, they do a better job than me.
The new bolts are also looking good.

Especially the back looks better with these nuts that have caps. I would appreciate if someone could tell me the english term for them.
The last thing to do now it the wooden back. I think I can do it tomorrow.

Acorn nuts

Second this.
Don't mess with the burr and ring. Those are really hard to get right. First see how well it grinds coffee before messing with them.
>>1143616
>It says coffee in old german letters.
It says coffee in *good* old german letters.
Fixed.

Thank you.

>Pédé means faggot in French
Thanks for the laughs.
Anyway I got the wood all cleaned up. Some light sanding and a few coats of linseed oil and its ready for assembling.
Finished.
Thanks for staying and the advice. I will provide a pic of grinded coffee if I come to it. And we will see how well it grinds.
It works. The coffee tastes good. Cheers!
