So I'm refinishing this old wood Japanese racing wheel and I need your help, craftsman bros.
I've already stained it and I am waiting for it to cure. I have purchased oil-based urethane in a tin and I could use some tips on how to make the final coat look like a mirror finish. I purchased a fine-bristle brush and I was hoping I could just glob on the clear layer by layer and sand with 220 grit in between? Three layers fine?

Five minimum since your hands will constantly be rubbing down the clear. The more the better, personally I'd do at least seven.

Hope you have a completely dust free environment, it takes ages to dry so the chance of dust pick up is huge.
If you use a spray can of an acrylic paint like Rust-Oleum crystal clear enamel you can do coats 2 minutes apart, instead of 2 days apart.

220 grit is gonna fuck your paintjob up.

Painting is 95% work and 5% paint.

220 will work in between clear coats, the new coat fills the scratches and obviously has the same refractive index.

This.
OP here; just globbed on the first layer of urethane. Maybe I should I have tinted the high gloss with a bit of amber because it didn't even out the look of the wood; it just made everything glossy.
