What are some half-decent diamond stone sets under $40 for my cheap ass? I'm looking for a set of two or three for sharpening chisels and plane irons and such. Anyone have any first-hand experience?

Not gonna happen. Anything that cheap won't be close to flat. Get DMTs or get some cheap oil/water stones. Why are you set on diamond?

well I enjoy the harbor freight ones, but definitely not that flat.
I mostly use it for the 200 grit one.
next level up (that actually goes to a decent grit) is Chef's Choice.
You may need to get DMT if you go up to a grit where dead flat is really important, like 6k or 12k.
i decided to stop at 1200/1k

there's nothing wrong with using a simple oil stone
