Hey all, I recently picked up a drill press, and with it came this vise. When I tried to close the jaws, I was met with adamant resistance. I noticed that there is a small overhang of the cast iron over the threads, which only allows me less than a quarter turn of the handle. Enclosed is a picture of the problem, along with a rough drawing of what the hole would look like if the threaded rod were to be removed.
Is there any good way to cut/grind this overhang off without damaging the threads? I have a large assortment of woodworking tools, plus quite a few metalworking tools. Any ideas are welcome, thanks!

that's the start of the thread, they all do that.
look elsewhere.

Try greasing the threads and working it.
I'd probably heat the body where the number 4 is until I get movement then wd40 the shaft while spinning it in. Wouldn't take much heat. oxy if you got it for speed, otherwise propane would do it.

The job requires a lubricant, not a water displacer.

No, the job requires a penetrative solvent and rust dissolver to break things free. Then you lubricate it.
I was going to mention WD40 too, it's obviously seized from old grease and dirt, possibly rust too.

Are you sure it's not a rapid action vise?
