Can a homeowner “save up” natural gas that comes into the home via a natural gas utility company pipeline?

For example, could the natural gas service be piped into a large 500 lb propane tank in the yard (as are commonly used in rural areas with propane) and saved for later use, in the event of a disruption to the natural gas utility system?

I’m thinking that for day-to-day use, the natural gas would flow into the tank and from there into the home for use by the furnace, stove, etc. but if something interrupted the gas service, an automatic valve would close the incoming pipeline, preserving 500 lbs of natural gas in the tank until the service was restored.

Is this possible?

Yes, you will need to pump it as even before the regulator utility natural gas is not under high pressure. Also propane liquefies, natural gas wont until its under extremely high pressure, a propane tank wont store nearly as much natural gas as it would propane.

You may also want to look into cng tanks that are designed for this (primarily for vehicles) they store it at like 6000 psi. A cng tank able to fit in a car may hold more natural gas than your propane tank.

> Yes, you will need to pump it as even before the regulator utility natural gas is not under high pressure.

So by “yes”, you actually mean "no, not really in any kinda useful capacity"?

Since that 500 lb propane tank would just act something like an unpressurized hot air balloon, you’d only be storing a few cubic feet of natural gas that would run out pretty quickly once the gas service was interrupted.

As others have mentioned, you're only filling it up with gas as that's what the mains send down their lines.
Now in another career as a child slave labourer in my parents petrol station I used to fill a lot of gas cylinders using the decanting way, which is at its most basic- shoving liquid gas into another container. That is what creates the pressure as it goes from liquid to gas and expands.
>>
>>1131925
an ng compressor seems to be $10k+, no idea what a high pressure large tank costs

>So by “yes”, you actually mean "no, not really in any kinda useful capacity"?

That is a fairly good summery of the situation for the average joe. CNG tanks =/= propane tanks. LNG requires lots of freezing, LOTS!

>>
Usually natural gas is stored under pressure (200 bar) and in the mains it has just a little overpressure over atmosphere.
So yes, you really need a CNG compressor to store it under high pressure. Don't even think of liquefying it, this requires several stage compressor with intensive cooling (liquid nitrogen levels).
But you might be able to store it in low pressure storage mode - the propane tank can hold up to 10-15 bar pressure (safety limit). So you could possibly store up 19 m3 at 10 bars overpressure.
However you need to have explosive environment safe compressor, because you don't want to explode. Then you need to have pressure regulating valve on the output to lower it to mains pressure.

heating oil might be your best bet OP
>>
>>1132005
how the fuck should this tray hold all of the oil in the tank
>>
>>1132006
doesn't, just holds what spills / leaks while the tank is being refilled
>>
>>1131931
This pic.

Why the fuck bury it?
>>
just put a balloon over the pipe for fucks sake
>>
>>1132024
Many people consider them unsightly.
>>
>>1132024
less likely to explode due to pressure as there will be grater pressure under the ground. also good insulation / wont heat up when the sun shines on it so even less likely to blow up into a fire ball.
>>
>>1131925

Propane is liquid, natural gas is not. The actual energy stored in the tank would be pathetic compared to propane.
>>
>>1132056
usually they pressurize the gases and i don't think he is planing to use it more than a day or 2 so i don't think it will make a big difference
>>
>>1131925

>Is this possible?

Possible obviously. Against code and against your use agreement with the gas company almost certainly. Your liability would be huge.

If you're that scared about losing service have some propane run stuff for backup and fill the propane tank with propane.

For a stove it's as simply as switching over to propane, for furnace/boiler it will probably require separate appliances.
>>
>>1132053
>less likely to explode due to pressure as there will be grater pressure under the ground.

Confirmed industrial gas-illiterate retard. Go away or shut the fuck up.

As for OP, it's not worth the money and hassle for something you are wildly unlikely to ever need.

You can plumb the existing LP tank to separate LP heaters if paranoid, or run a line to your workshop etc if you want heat there.

But burying them exposes them to constant moisture and would rot them out insanely quickly compared to just having them on a pad.

Your propane tank is for propane. Put fucking propane in it.

It's almost like you are trying to tell me something I already know about.

And it almost seems like you think Cathodic protection makes steel totally rust proof

I can tell that you have no idea
>>
>>1131961
Think you're mixing up a few things there buddy.

CNG =/= LNG
>>
>>1132056
Propane is gas until it has been liquefied into LPG, same as natural gas is gas until its turned into LNG.

OP just get a bunch of LPG tanks and save then for this day of catastrophe that will never come
>>

>OP just get a bunch of LPG tanks and save then for this day of catastrophe that will never come

the residents of california are currently experiencing said catastrophe and will continue to experience it for the next week.

Shit happens man, it doesnt have to be doomsday for you to be in a bad situation.
>>
You can get conversion kits to run generators off propane which would be an ideal use for a tank that size. Unlike gasoline which has horrible storage issues due to humidity, propane stores indefinitely hence its use on forklifts, floor buffers etc.
>>

>the residents of california are currently experiencing said catastrophe and will continue to experience it for the next week.

Best response is sell out after the mess dries up then move where a dam won't take you out.

Two things are effectively unstoppable, floods and storm surge. Always buy accordingly.

I don't think you know what the word "catastrophe" means.

If you liken it to a slight hiccup in life then you are on the same level as the house wife who thinks that loosing a heel is a catastrophe of this year

Fires through trailer parks are fucking intense.

if you're talking about floods then propane isn't going to save you unless you have watertight snorkels for the regulators

>>

It is real. They steal natural gas from cracks in large pipes. They slap a big bag over the crack or hole they made and let it fill up.
