I want to make a twin bed frame (74x40) from only 1x2s. Is this a worthwhile thing to do or just unsafe? I figure that me and my mattress are only 250 pounds total, which means 62.5 pounds per post and 125 pounds across each beam which a 1x2 can take if setup vertically.
no, only for lats
get some 2x4s and at least 2x6s

Maybe go to the hardware stor and find a nice female companion? A grown man sleeping in a twin bed is a bit sad.

Short answer, no it'll suck.
And your 250lb fatass weight is the STATIC LOAD. You moving around on the bed is a dynamic load which your shitty 1x2s arent going to handle.
Go buy some cheap 2x dimensional pine if you cant afford nice lumber, or get to planing and laminating those 1x2

You need more beef in the wood even if there's not much beef in the bed.
See this for an illustration (although it's for a King, the general structure is good to copy, and you can skip the headboard)

t. First year engineering student.
Shut the fuck up.

First year, huh? About a month into your second semester? Yeah... Get back to us when you've taken a class that isn't a university requirement.

This post doesn't consider the way you might construct the frame.
Right out of the gate you're going to get all the DIY 'know-it-all' types telling you 1x2 timber isn't substantial but true to /diy/ for it doesn't account for your method of construction. 1x2 is more than adequate providing you build it in the right way, understanding wood grain directional strength and how to double up timber and making proper joints.

>how to double up timber and making proper joints
I think you're probably overestimating the amount of engineering thought that will be dedicated to this project.
I'll leave these here and just walk out...

My nigga I was yelling at him for throwing buzzwords like static and dynamic like he knows what it means
If I was in a situation where I had to do this project and only had 1x2 lumber, first thing I would do is glue them to make 2x2's and 2x4's. I mean yes you certainly can do some structural cleverness to do the job in sturdy fashion without gluing boards together but that's a lot of work for something as basic as a bed frame.
Any particular reason you insist on using such small dimension wood, op?

>from only 1x2s
throw them away
get 2x4s
