I'm rigging my boat and want to weigh everything I'm putting in it to do a moment diagram (calculate weight and balance).
Any recommendations on scales that have a pretty large platform yet are reasonably priced?
This looked interesting, until I saw the platform was only 10x10-inch.

>budget: I'd rather it be below 100 USD, but if I have to go higher I will.
>accuracy: +/- 1lb
>max weight: ~400-lbs.
Have you thought about a hanging scale? Thats how people in the automotive field do what your doing with your boat. Just weigh everything with some fishing line or a calibrated basket. http://www.scalesgalore.com/DigiWeigh_DWPC2X_Crane_Scales.cfm

Put the shit into your truck and drive it down to ye local trucking scale.

Thanks. I did think about a hanging scale, but some stuff I'm weighing might be hard to balance in a basket so I think a platform might be better. I also want to weigh my resin and then read what is left in the barrel after I'm done, that way I can tell how much resin I use. It would be hard to hang one of those drums, but putting one on a platform would be okay.

I'm going to be weighing so much stuff and want the individual weights because I'm going to use them to calculate weight and balance.

Don't bother, just do an incline test. Here is the wiki page for starters

Scales like you're talking about are hella expensive. How much weight are we talking? Tanita makes an accurate bathroom scale with memory so you can put your stuff on it, wait for the beep and pull it off to see what it weighs. Or use a hanging scale like previously mentioned

Thanks, I'm familiar. The reason I want to use a scale is because I want the individual moments caused by each component to be calculated (so Mpart = W * d). The reason is I'd like to learn each moment with respect to distance from the center of gravity, so I know how worthwhile it is to spend money getting lighter components. If a part is right over the CG, I'd spend less to make it lighter than if it was at the bow.

Thanks, yeah I feel like a pretty standard platform scale would be okay. I think the heaviest thing I'd be weighing would be under 400-lbs.

Ah I see. I guess you'd be interested in height as well as centreline displacement.
Just out of interest what boat do you have?
