Right so my gram is in the middle of nowhere and wants to have some form of TV but the thing is shes retired and cant afford cable.I'd like to do something nice for her and get her set up with some free-ish TV. Right now the best option off the top of my head is a Roku but I will need an antenna because of just how far away she is(Can't get alot of stations without it). What sort of antenna should I get and is there a better alternative for free TV thats legal? Internets too complicated for her so thats out of the picture but if I could setup something that she can use without maintenance I'm all ears, I don't live close by so it would be hard to troubleshoot any problems she comes across. All help is appreciated.
>roku
>antenna
nope
Don't be such a cheap asshole and get her a pirate Direct TV with all the porn channels unblocked.
I can hook you up if you want to.

Get a TV antenna. You will want to see what channels she is capable of getting. Check out antennaweb.org . You will also want to make sure you get a roof top or pole mounted antenna. Unless shes really close to some transmitters set-top ones are usually sucky.
The map on antenna web will show you were the stations are. If they are all in one direction, a directional antenna will get you farther range. If they are all over an omni-directional antenna will get you more stations.

Otherwise if this isn't doable because of remote location and she has high speed internet for some reason, get a smart tv with netflix. My 96 year old grandma has a smart tv in her room at the nursing home and she binge watches netflix. She uses my account and can navigate it just fine. Full seasons of network television on there.

she wouldn't like that and I don't think I could convince her its legit
If you get her a big ugly dish there are quite a few c? ku? band channels still broadcasting without encryption.

I got an antena myself. Its pretty fucking nice and terrifically cheap. Its not like cable has less comercials or anything, and all i watch is the nature shows on pbs, the chinese and german news, and ocasionally the simpsons, so I don't see a need pay for it.
You will need a hd tv or a converterbox but other than that its pretty easy.

Just plug a cheap laptop into her tv and set it to play a loop of five or six movies on endless repeat. She's old, by the time the loop restarts she'll have forgotten the first movie and it will be like new again for her.

Roku needs internet.
Just gonna have to pony up for a small antenna and hd antenna or call direct tv.

honestly do this but actually just get her a big hard drive full of movies
when you visit her for afternoon tea, ask her what shows she used to like and then download them for her at home. come back with them on a big usb key and transfer them while you have your next tea date.

1. Get satellite tv at your house.
2. Get extra receiver
3. Put extra receiver at grans house
4. Have a happy gran!
Over the air tv is fine. If she's hundreds of miles from a city she'll get 3 or 4 good channels, closer and she'll get 20 or 30. The stations are pretty much the same as cable anyway and all you need is an antenna and a tv new enough to support digital but old enough to still have a coax input.

>shes retired and cant afford cable
Sounds like gram gram is a typical boomer and needs to go back to greeting at Walmart.

is there (literally..) fucking nothing FTA over satellite in Murica, or what? Europe has shitloads, mostly dross, but still, free - get a really, really big dish, point at civilisation, sorted.

Get a yagi and put it on a rotating mount.
If she's got internet get a jailbroken fire stick.
