Any jewellers here? I got this pocket watch for my birthday and I want to mess with it a little, grind it down and patina it and kinda age it a little. But I can't tell if this is legit sterling silver or what. It's non magnetic, but I figure out could still be some nickel alloy. Anyone know any relatively harmless tests I can do to make sure?
Let is age naturally. Every scar tells a story.

What do you think the base metal could be then? Nickel? I want to file and sand down the design

Is iit stamped anywhere? I know all pure silver products must bear a stamp showing the weight and purity rating, and I'm pretty sure sterling silver products have to be stamped "SS" or ".925".

It's silver plate if you're lucky but that looks like an incredibly cheap piece of shit.

could be anything. it's a cheap piece of shit.
china makes nice things out of lead pewter and steel with the much cheaper radioactive cobalt-60. you can buy things like decorative cups with stickers saying "not for drinking". because its made of poison. you can vapor deposition plastic so it could even just be nylon under that plating.
Looks plated. Open it up let's see what's inside
