No way I started at 18, but my brother who did 2 years at community college is now in his second year at trade school to become an electrician
>>
can you do a run down of what happens during your apprenticeship like is it all school or do you go on site? can you get a job while an apprentice thay would actually pay bills?
>>
>>1120374

There is no 'too old' for anything...

I'm 52, and thinking of a change myself...
>>
It's never too old to start anything. I went to school and became an ac tech at 19. Became an apprentice but I eventually had to leave for health reasons. I decided to go back to school and get a bachelor's in finance. I would have preferred working outside but now I live a nerf life. Goes to show its never to late.
>>
I started when I was 17 and I'm a journey man now
>>
I'm 23 and in the second year of a ibew apprenticeship. ( the only real apprenticeship to become an electrician)
>>
>>1120374
It's not like being a fucking Jedi. You don't have to get your apprenticeship at 4 years old.
>>
>>1120374
generally being a bit older helps because people appreciate the maturity.

This. I'm 29 and finishing my second year of welding school. Most of the younger guys straight out of high school don't take it seriously. They don't have any initiative and think that they just have to graduate with a passing grade to land a job. The older students tend to try to get the most out of their time in the shop, showing up early or staying after class, volunteering for projects, asking to learn welding related things outside of the curriculum. Instructors notice that stuff and when employers come to the school guess who's names they get.
>>
>>1120393
I'm a first year sheet metal apprentice and it's on the job training with a week of school every couple of months which you go on unemployment for if you qualify. And yes, you can make good money eh doing an apprenticeship.
>>
>>1120374
>Is 20 too old to....

Fuck off little kid.
>>
>>1120433
>>1120463

>tfw you've been studying to be a Jedi since 4 yrs old and some douche with too much midichlorians comes in and steals your job
>>
>>1120374
Not at all

Know loads of people who are just now starting apprenticeships in their 30s
>>
>>1120395

Yeah but I bet your autistic, by 52 il just know what the fuck to do
>>
>>1120476

In my class most of the guys were over 50 and many of them had years of working experience.
At 32 I was the youngest. I only had some practical experience and little theoretical.

Some would even "correct" the instructor or disrupt the class.
For example the instructor would say something, then someone would shout "thats not how I do it" and proceed to explain his way even thugh its not part of the curriculum.

That, and the lessons took an extra half an hour to start because every one of them needed to smoke a cigarette first and tell war stories.
>>
>>1120574
Industries change. You are stupid if you refuse to adapt.
>>
>>1120577
>For example the instructor would say something, then someone would shout "thats not how I do it" and proceed to explain his way even thugh its not part of the curriculum.

I bet some of them argued that because they have done it like that for years it is obviously the industry accepted way of doing it.

No one wants to admit they did something wrong for decades.
>>
>>1120577

This. There is really no golden ticket and it depends on the situation.

I did a year working some boat tours and the boss refused to hire any old salts because they always tried to undermine everything we put in place.

It was much easier to slap a younger guy into shape rather than fight some old inflexible cunt.
>>

There are also a variety of ways to perform many jobs and still obtain a code compliant result.
>>
>>1120374
I've known 2 people in their early-mid 30s pick up a sparky's apprenticeship simply because they needed to do something different in their lives.
>>
>>1120395
By 52 you should be in supervision or middle management.
>>
>>1120374

woah there, anon

don't be too ambitious.

If you don't have 2 years of apprenticeship done by 13 years old, you might as well start prostituting

It's not like assholes fresh out of prison can become electricians or anything

Nope. I have a friend that retired at 55 and went into the trade. He's doing quite well. Being "older" his best selling point was reliability.
>>1120385
pic related
>>
>>1120374
20 isnt too old to do anything. Goddamn youth is wasted on the young.

Enlist today, pussy. Become a 3E0X1 or an X2 if you're like me and dont like the idea of 8 months at Shephard.
>>
>>1120574
You dont understand. By that age many people have already been through multiple different careers or perhaps spent most of their working life in one main career amid other random non permanent things.
By that age many people are just ready to do something different.
I've been in my career for 20 years now.
Making $80k / year on top of great benefits. Not the best but its ok for me i guess. Single. no kids. No debt.
Its ok compensation and i could stay in it until i retire, continuing with yearly pay raises probly top out at around $100k / year.

But i fucking hate it everyday im sick of it i want to do something different, like electronic tech something.
>>
>>1120767
Yeah. Most are. And many of them are fed up with all of it and just want to do something else
>>
>>1121391
Get a hobby interesting enough you stop being annoyed by your job. Life is a shit sandwich and the more bread you have the less shit you taste.

I'm even more ancient than you.
>>
>>1121425
Hobby is one thing. But it cant fully compensate for 50 hours a week spent doing what i cant stand doing anymore.
Maybe a hobby is enough for some people. My problem is more than this
>>
>>1121430
In that case reduce all your overhead costs and stash war reserve money so you can live on a reduced income while pursuing your dream. If you plan well, you can do well. If you are overwhelmed by emotion and fail to plan thoroughly for the transition, you'll lose.

If you are really shrewd you'll figure out how to leverage some of what you know how to do but don't like doing to complement what you might want to do. Thought is free, so think well and good luck to you.
>>
thinking of applying to the steamfitters i have 5 years of welding experiance as a pipefitter, maybe you guys can help as i dont know anyone in one of these unions.

do you travel all over the place to do work?
what is involved in the apprenticeship? are you taking classes and working alongside members?
is there always steady work or do you get layed off from time to time?
>>
>>1120660
Its not that they were wrong, its that it wasn't part of the curriculum, therefore they woud fail the assessments if they did it their way.

Nevermind the instructor explained that to them numerous times.

Also some of them refused to wear safety gear even though not wearing it would void the school's insurance in case of an accident.
>>
>>1120374
Not at all. I did 4 years for my state and 5 through the IBEW. Also attained numerous other certs along the way. Made 6 figures with little OT last year (double the average in my area), and am getting paid to type this.
>>
>>1120558
I like you...fucking nerd.
>>
>>1120767

Plenty of ppl go back to school at all ages. My father in law is a licensed electrician/plumber, mechanic, carpenter, at the age of 57 he went back to school again to learn Boilers (he is done with that now)

He makes like nine grand a month now, due to all the skills he has.

Maybe you should go to /b/, you're clearly a faggot.
>>
You're never too old to learn a trade.
I had a bloke in my class who started his plumbing apprenticeship at 70 years old.
>>
HVAC tech here. Im in my second year of work (but i finished all the trade school in a different style program) now i make 30 an hour and work by myself. Only goes up from here
>>
>>1120574

Kiddo, you have no fucking idea...

Currently an apprentice electrician in FL. I started jr. Year of high school by doing dual enrollment at my local community college, all paid for by my HS/public schools. Summer of jr-sr year the program got me an apprenticeship for the summer. Senior year I continued to do the classes. I graduated 5/2015 and didn't go back into electrical until 6/2016. I'm 2 years ahead of all other apprentices, but only 19. Guys I work with range from 18-40 as apprentices, and 22-57 as journeymen. Not all of the journeymen at my company are licensed journeymen, but are called journeymen because they can run a truck.

Tl;Dr I took dual enrollment and I'm technically 2 years in by schooling but only a year in on the job at 19. Definitely not bad to start now if you want to stick with it
>>
>>1120374
Why would you think 20 is too old to start anything? You could be an electrician for 10 years starting now, give it up, and then be successful at something else.
>>
>>1120374
why do you think it is that a lot of trades require a slavery period as a holdover from hundreds of years ago? I can understand some specialisations requiring on the job training. but for the majority of work, picking the right part and installing it isnt some crazy high skilled profession. take your residential electrician or plumber for example. literally people call them out to unblock drains. the hardest part about those jobs is digging a trench, pretty much everything else is a phillips head screwdriver and a shifter.
>>
Startet with 16. Fuck I still hate this job.
