Would any of you gentlemen happen to know what kind of Stihl saw this is? Picked it up out of impulse at a shop.

You've put the bar upside down m8
>>

this >>1116444
bugs me too
>>
Looks like its got a sticker on the side, probably has a serial number on it. Type that into google and bingo.
>>
That's a newer model since it has the new style gas caps, pretty sure it's a stihl 260 which is a really good saw. Looks like it's seen some pretty hard use though. Take the muffler off and post some pics of the cylinder/piston I can likely let you know if it needs to be rebuilt or not.

There's no such thing as an upside down bar, you're supposed to flip it to even out wear every once and a while.
>>
>>1116568

OP here. It was nasty when I snapped the picture, but I did a thorough cleaning. Still stained, but it's alright.

Looked it up on my own and found it to be a MS260 Pro. So, you're spot on.

She's starting in 1-2 pulls, it revs great on high side, but it's dying on idle. I've heard I could have a broken line or stiff carb issue that's common with these.

^tried to follow manual to get it to idle, with no luck.

Compression is 175-180 psi, so that's good. Cleaned the filters. Changed the plug. Cleaned the inside somewhat carefully.

>>1116582
Yeah check out the fuel filter that's inside the gas tank. Those tend to get clogged, aside from that just run it for a while at half throttle or whatever. That can help flush the carb out.

Make sure to use fresh high quality mix and fuel, higher octane the fuel the better.

If that doesn't help then just get a carb kit and rebuild it, they're cheap, and like you said, look for crapped out fuel lines.

Also make sure it's throwing oil off of the bar, it doesn't have to be a whole lot just a nice mist when you rev it up. Throw down a piece of white paper and rev it to look for dots.
>>

What do I look for on a fuel filter (rather than just swap one out).

I'm using some non-ethanol stuff with my oil.

Probably going for a carb kit. I know they're cheap.

Oils like a charm. Took the bar off to work on it though.

It's only my second time working on a chainsaw, but i'm trying to get into this as a steady hobby. Market here is huge for them too.

>>1116601
Just look for buildup, might as well replace the filter while your'e at it.
>>
>>1116582
Keep the chain sharp and it'll cut good. Have a 260 and 360 and both have been used hard for like 10 years now.

That said don't ever buy a new Stihl, quality has really gone to shit over the last few years and the warranty is worthless. I've moved on to Echo for any new saws
>>
>>1116618

I've heard much about that, I've been avoiding the newer stuff on the local Craigs.

Dying for an Echo CS-590. Missed two locally for 100 bucks each.
>>
>>1116618
I have an 026 that runs like a raped ape. I'll just keep rebuilding it as needed. Currently on the lookout for an 046.
>>
>>1116627
I bought an echo 490. Have only used it a couple of times but it starts easier, cuts good, is light and most of the housing is made of magnesium. The magnesium was the big selling point for me since most of he Stihls are all plastic. Echo also has a 5 year warranty but not sure if they actually stand behind it

Another thing I really like about the Echo is you only have to remove 4 bolts to replace the piston. The Stihls have to be nearly completely disassembled

The 0s imo are the best saws Stihl ever made and likely ever will make. The early ms saws are pretty solid but not anywhere nearly the same quality and now the new shit is just junk

I'd still be running the 0s if they didn't all get stolen. Only real benefit with the ms series is that they tend to be lighter
>>
Dolmar and stihl best chainsaws ever
>>
>>1116633
I worked with their battery powered MSA 200 for a while, really liked it.

I hope the electric meme will be further improved.
>>
>>1116633
The new shit is not junk. 260, 361, 461, 660 are the best chainsaws I know. Why would you say that? Do you use chainsaws?
>>
>>1116714
If you prefer the Stihls without computer tuning, hoard them now.
>>
>>1116714
260 is old now, 261 is the new shit. 260 series isn't as good as the 026 btw, the 026 made more power and was lighter weight.
>>
>>1116750
I'm gonna need a chainsaw soon. How is 036/360 compared to 361? If the 036 is worthy I might just go for it as it is much cheaper than a new 361
