Hey /diy/
For a project I'm working on I want to use a crt monitor and make a new housing for it. I want to install the monitor in a metal housing (which I'll make myself) as part of a bigger device. I'm thinking of using an old AppleColor crt that I have lying around.
My question is, since crt's are usually in plastic housings, can I safely take the crt out of the plastic housing and transfer it to a metal one? What precautions should I take and do I need to insulate the crt from the metal using plastic or someting?
thanks
Ground the housing. That is all.

Literally, just this. Also, make sure the flyback lead is well clear of the metalwork to avoid flashover. No real problem otherwise.
Leave it unplugged for a few days and discharge the big caps once you open it.

Also, replace all electrolytic caps with name brand ones, and any component that looks like it has suffered lots of heat. Up the ratting on those if space allows.

This. Keeping in mind that the CRT itself is a Big Cap.

thanks. Online I can find some how-to's on discharging, some say connect the anode on the tube with a metal part of the chassis, some say connect the anode to the literal ground (as in sticking the other end of the wire in the earth)... what's best?

1. Connect chassis to earth.
2. Connect anode to chassis.
