Guys i need some help. I was retarded and loaded linux before i loaded windows, now i cant get windows 7 to boot - presumably because linux bootloader is still on there. is there any way i can hard format my SSD?
>>
Using an Windows install device like a bootable USB stick with Windows on it or a hard disk
>>
i loaded windows 7 from a usb but it said the "drivers could not be found"

It think it's time for you to leave here, normie

>REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
>>
>>1097842
You always install windows first and then linux second to make Grub work properly without fussing with it.
>>
>>1097844
Normal problem installing win7 on USB. Google it. I've had to do it a few times doing installs because I forgot the fix from the last time and it works every time. Fucking Google it.
>>
>>1097842
Grub should still let you boot to Windows, you could always remove it which can be tricky.

Or you could just boot a Windows installer, nuke all the partitions, reinstall.
>>
If you don't need anything on the drive, download gparted.
GUI based partitioning tool in which you can delete all partitions and "reset" it as you got it from the manufacturer.

In the future, I would recommend using linux or windows in a virtual machine via virtualbox.
OR
Buy another drive and get a removable drive cage with an extra cage that allows you to shutdown and swap the drive for either OS.

I do the drive cage method for my computer with my day-to-day Windows and a gaming only version of Windows.
>>
Fuck dual booting. Reload with Windows as host and Linux as guest in a VM.

Linux is for play and Windows is for more important software with no Linux equivalent and for printing because Linux printing isn't very reliable because printer OEM drivers a shit.

lol
Actual professionals use OSX, many times with a Linux VM.

Windows didnt even get native bash shell until fucking 2016.
literally the only argument ever was
>muh photoshop, muh excel
Both of which came to OSX when they switched to intel processors a decade ago.

The development environment in OSX or Linux is vastly superior to windows.

The only thing Windows has going for it, is legacy support. And guess what? Microsoft has been talking about dropping legacy support for years. Killing off the ONLY thing that gained its market share.

Not only that, any job description using legacy hardware means thats its a very specialized thing and that you arent actually in a tech field.
The tech world runs on *nix
>>
>>1098110
Windows has a native bash shell now! ?
Windows is the best for gaming, windows 10 had a good user interface, but the Spyware and lack of gaming support made it shit.
>>
>>1097842
Your win7 stick is likely failing because you're using a USB3 port, which needs drivers. Use a non-blue USB port, should stop the driver warning.

To "hard reset" or completely wipe the HDD, clean the disk once you get to the partitioning screen of the win7 installer. This *will* wipe everything.

> press shift +F10 to open a command window
> type "diskpart" then enter
> type "list disk", then enter
> type "select disk x", where x is the number of your primary HDD, as returned by the list disk command, then enter
> type "clean" then enter
> close command window, create partitions using windows installer partition manager. Don't forget to leave some room for your linux partition.

Boom.

>i loaded windows 7 from a usb but it said the "drivers could not be found"

this is another reason why, in 2016, it's still a good idea to have an optical drive. like a flashlight, it wont get used often, but when you need it, it'll save your life.
>>

Because you are inept and cant work around Windows nerfing Win7 installs on new hardware?
Kill yourself

do you get a chubby when you launch these gratuitous personal attacks?

I just went to Best-Buy's desktop computer page, selected the Everyday Computers section, and checked the first 16 computers on the list. All but 2 (shitty Acers) had DVD drives, so I guess the trend away from optical drives has reversed. Which makes sense, coz a lot of people have piles of DVDs full of data they saved over the years, and need a way to access it.
>>
>>1098534
I ordered an optical driver earlier today on amazon
Its going to install it right under my teac 5.25.

Im excited, gonna burn some mix tape CDrs

Only in the world of Graphic Design and Hipsters. I work with SMEs and ALL use mainly Windows with an occasional Mac user who tries to run Fusion for stuff that isn't native OSX.

The amount of business applications that run native on Mac is vastly smaller than Windows. It will change (thank goodness) as more and more apps go Cloud.

IMHO OSX being derived from Unix is vastly superior to Windows but Microshaft win in terms of sheer quantity plus that OSX only used to run on Apple hardware (different now).

Replaced my laptops Optical Drive with a hard drive bay. Stuck in a 512GB SSD as my primary drive and then moved the old HD to the former optical drive location. Can't remember the last time I needed to read/write a DVD/CD.

For the record, I'm currently finishing up a hardware refresh for a large pharmaceutical company (as in, the site I'm working on is several city blocks in size). All of the computers, save for a few in the labs, are Windows. All of them.

when a virus encrypts and ransoms all your data, or a disk head crashes, you'll wish you had. or when you cloud storage is hacked and your pantyhose pics are now being shared on /b/.

Or you know, pretty much all developers, sys admins and other technology jobs of the same nature.

I guess the term "professional" wasnt a good one. How about tech literate?
When I worked as a telemarketer I used windows in a professional setting. Is that impressive?
It makes gaymen faggots jerk themselves off about how great windows is.

an infectable media, unlike a DVD.

30 cents for 4.7G. lasts 20 years. not infectable. hard to destroy, hard to lose.
>>

I sandbox most things so a virus infection is unlikely. Even if I used dual layer dvds, I'd be sitting there all day feeding dvds in for a backup and I don't trust incrementals. Tape would be acceptable if the capacity was decent.

Extrnal hard drives and usb sticks are a far better option for me.

I'v been running without a resident virus checker for over 10 years and still nothing. I'm an oldfag so the paranoia is strong in me.
>>
>>1098608
Seen cds and dvds die after less than a year due to aluminium rot. Multiple copies are the way to go.

Either your internet starts to suck because you are a bot or it stops your computer and says gib monies
>>
>>1099560
Not that guy, but another non-AV fag here, I tend to keep an eye on my task manager, I'll open it every now and then and see whats running. Anyone who claims any type of proficiency on [$OS] should know the day to day processes that run, and be able to spot those that are new or unrelated to common tasks. It used to be a lot easier in NT4 days before drive indexing. If you heard you HDD suddenly loose it's shit, you could be certain something was on your system.

Last time I got raep was in my early teens.. T..thanks MaryTylerMooreCreampie.mp4.exe.

>>1099585
Not necessarily, a previous employer had half their LAN turned into a cialis spam botnet while the senior net admin was on holidays, it was not initially noticed because the malware authors were smart enough to throttle their bots enough to fly under the radar (bandwidth and processor wise), it was running for four days till the senior wizard got back and noticed all the odd IP connections in logs (one of his lackies got walked for not checking this daily as he should have been). Not all malware has a heavy footprint.
>>
>>1099667
>Anyone who claims any type of proficiency on [$OS] should know the day to day processes that run

in XP there were around 23 processes to keep track of, with 5-10 of them called svchost.exe just to confuse you. with Win10 it's more like 70 and there's no way to remember that many. plus the fact that any virus worth it's salt will modify the OS to keep itself hidden.
>>
I dont run an antivirus
I run Malwarebytes AntiRansomware software. It monitors hard drive usage, and when any encryption happens it stops it in its tracks. Of course you can add exceptions if you want to encrypt.

That and I run regular malwarebytes if im worried something happened.
