I got this vice today, its a bit rusty but nevertheless works.

What is the best method for cleaning it up, apple cider vinegar steel wool and then some WD40?

Also curious about the vice itself its made in Japan by ETC industries a company that doesn't seem to exist anymore. Only thing found on google were some ebay listings for hand tools.

Cheers

Its pretty small as well, is it likely to be a jewelers vise?
>>
japs make good stuff, as for the rust, electrolysis or something fuck I dunno.
>>
On rusted parts, I'll first wire wheel it to get the crumbly and easy stuff off.
Then I use naval jelly until I start seeing bare metal, then I'll use the wire wheel again to get it completely clean.

I've never tried apple cider vinegar, but I've seen videos of it and it seems like it works good too. Use whatver you have access to.

If you don't have a drill and a wire wheel, you can use a heavy duty stainless streel brush too. I have one that's really abrasive and it's great.

disassemble completely

put into citric acid water bath

wait overnight

drain and brush

repeat acid bath until no rust

or just electrolysis

I took a wire wheel to a small 4in wilton scout vise.
Took off all the rust and peeling paint very well.

Then I never repainted it and now its rusting again. Still when I get around to it ill re wirewheel it. I have one on a bench grinder
>>
Best paint I've found for this stuff is the "Alkyd Hammer Finish Enamel" if you look it up, made by Dulux and a couple of other companies. Generally- >>1097692 said will do the job, if the rust is really fucky and won't go away you can use a diluted muriatic acid (any hardware store- concrete section) and it will strip it off in under any hour.
>>
hey. i've got the same brand vice. it broke though. the base cracked.

Next time you do it apply a rust inhibitor and dry it with a heat gun before painting

Relax, my friend. These are protective jaws, I used some aluminium L-profile. The vice was only finger-tight, and last of all, the replacement spindle came in a 500mm piece of which I used only 300mm, so it's the leftover in the vice. :-)

Forget "household" rust baths or mechanical rust removal.

Go out and buy a pint or two of "Evap-o-rust" This shit works better than ANYTHING you'll mix up in your kitchen, is reusable, and can be handled without gloves. Just pour it back into the bottle for your next project.

It's not caustic, oily, odorous, destructive or particularly volatile. No sanding or scrubbing needed. Let it sit overnight and then just rinse the parts clean. Easy as pie.

I love that stuff. It ain't cheap, though. Good news is, you can get it at Harbor Freight. They probably sell it because their tools rust up if you look at them funny. Dig up a 20% off coupon from somewhere.
