Serrated-edge knives.

Try a good one like a Spyderco and you will realize there isn't a thing they can't cut with less effort than a plain edge, there isn't a cutting task they aren't better at than ordinary blades except shaving your face. They aren't even hard to sharpen, but people are scared to even try sharpening them.

You certainly can make a serrated knife to be 'shaving sharp'. I have made wood stropping sticks with the right profile to get into the serrations before.

Though it's a pointless exercise because serrated knives are not for shaving. I mentioned this in my first post ITT.
>>
>>1096365
What do you consider a "properly sharpened" edge?
Also what is this arbitrary "shaving sharp" nonsense.

Different edge profiles set out to achieve different things. Whether you want a slicer, or something with an easily honed working edge, or even something with a long lasting working edge like a convex.

You can tell when someone has never touched a truly sharp knife with an acute slicing edge. and tries to test a blades sharpness with his thumb. Itll cut you before you feel it, and youd be fucking retarded to try and shave your arm with it.

Thats funny, because you can quite literally make a butter knife shave have with 2 seconds on the belt sander.
Utility knives will shave hair.
These are not insurmountable feats of sharpening.

It may be to someone who just got into the knife hobby.
Maybe someone who just bought their first plain edge knife and now shuns combo edge knifes. Kinda like someone who is clueless enough to compare a serrated edge vs a straight edge on their inherent "sharpness" while not defining what he means by "sharpness".

>>
>>1096668
First off, you are quoting two different posters.
Im not going to sit and agree with the first guys generalization that serrated is completely better than straight edge.

I simply wanted him to quantify what he meant by sharp.
He literally refused to.
Calling something sharp is a very vague and arbitrary thing that doesnt have a set meaning. It needs context

He then tried to use whatever definition he made up in his head (without defining it) to compare apples to oranges.

Is that really that hard to do?
>>
>>1096186
I second this. I made my own with the head from a squirt bottle and it does a phenomenal job at removing any air from any line and is fantastic for bleeding lines on automobiles.
>>

I love this thing, but at the same time, hate it. Because I know everytime I get it out I'm going to be dealing some cunts shitty clusterfuck of a wiring job.
>>
>>1096178
Well I'd say a breaker bar is more useful as torqueing to spec only does so much in terms of helping something get fixed. Removing old bolts is a harder job than torqueing to spec with any old t wrench. But then again I managed to make my own breaker bar with a wrench and a 4 foot lead pipe.
>>

While working at Lexus I received one of these and despite me being an electrical engineer intern I had absolutely no idea what it was for. I'd end up clipping it to wires to play with on my free time and touching random cables to hear the noise. I think I have a more modern version as it is blue. I no longer work there but I was able to keep it and it's helped so much for rewiring the 60 year old electric lines in my home.

>>
>>1096680
>now, the question is, will a train turn that corner quicker than a truck?

I didnt actually read your post because the context of a knife and a truck are different.

>not even sure what you want to say in this post
When someone comes in saying you have never used a "properly sharpened" knife as an argument, is it that unreasonable to ask them what they mean by that?
>>
>>1096683
And a "scary sharp" scalpel is different than a "scary sharp" bushcraft knife with a convex edge on it.
Cant logically compare the two unless you give it some more explicit parameters to.

Instead all I get is more buzzwords that have no set meaning out of the guy
>>
>>1096687
>When someone comes in saying you have never used a "properly sharpened" knife as an argument, is it that unreasonable to ask them what they mean by that?

What do you mean by "unreasonable"? Do you think there is a reason behind someone uses "you never used properly sharpened", or do you think there is a reason to doubt he did, or do you think there is a reason to ask this question? Do you think it is unreasonable to not ask a person claims you have never used a properly sharpened knife? Do you think he is unreasonable to claim you have never used a properly sharpened knife? Do you think a knife is reasonable to be properly sharpened? Do you think the person can reasonably sharpen properly? Do you think the knife can be reasonably sharpened properly? Do you think a truck is reasonably faster than a train? Do you think a truck can turn corners unreasonably faster than a train? Do you think a train a reasonably fast? Do you think a wheel is reasonably fast if it is on a train? Do you think knifes are reasonably a sharp person? Do you think you are reasonably a sharp knife? Do you think it is reasonable to ask you if you are a sharp person? Do you think it is unreasonable to ask a person who claims he is reasonable to question if someone argue if you have never used a reasonably sharpened knife is he as sharp as a truck to a car as to a train is to a knife?

Serrated blades are often just a crutch for people that don't know how to sharpen a straight blade properly.

Sure, they're better for ripping through stuff, but anything that requires a more considered approach is better suited to a straight edge, like skinning and preparing an animal, for starters.

I'll second that, but I will suggest to use Stahlwille Manoskop torque wrenches like pic related. Advantages:
-You don't need to zero them for storage
-You can set the torque in seconds

In the end of the pipe at the handle is a little lever which, when depressed, unlocks the sliding scale which is moved via the red button thing. Slide to desired torque, release lever, 3 seconds passed.
I used them last weekend to put now rear shocks in my Toyota, good tools are pure bliss.

Brethren, thank you.
I moved from Canada where snap blades are the common to Britbon... sry Australia where it's all "stanley knife, all day long"
I can't believe how much snap blades are looked down upon here because they just don't have professional versions available. If you pulled out a stanley knife as a carpet layer in North America you would be fired for wasting time changing blades, regardless of whatever excuse of a "fast swap" system you use. The blades are cheap as all fuck for a reason, nobody who's payed attention to innovation uses them anymore.
Olfa is the biggest cutter manufacturer in the world and thier standards are immaculate. They make saw blades, hardened high carbon blades, hook blades, ect for a ton of models of slotted snap blade style knives alone.
Currently sourcing my LA-X from glorious Nippon with black nightmare blades and happy to piss all the idiot locals off by shaving with it after cutting a dozen sheets of plywood and scraping epoxy off tools with it.

Handplanes overall, in particular block planes, rabbet planes and spokeshaves.
>>
>>1096678
>How is this used?

You take a little rubber ring that's about the size of a cheerio and hook it onto the 6 prongs of the tool. When you arm the tool it spreads the rubber band to larger than your wrist. To use it you catch the calf, place the stretched-cheerio over its scrotum, feel to make sure that both testicles are below the band, and then release it. Last but not least, put some antibacterial anti-insect spray on it, as the testicles literally rot off and you don't want them to infect the rest of the calf.

How this is more humane than knife castration I do not know. If you're going to remove my balls, please cut them out instead of rubberbanding them and letting them rot off.

This, this procedure right here, is the result of animal rights wackos trying to "help" with animal welfare.

Assume you have a generator in your back yard. This double-ended-male plug will allow you to connect that generator to your house wiring so you don't have to run an extension cord through the yard, under a door, up the stairs, and to your router. The downside of it is that your local electric lineman starts working on something, "thinks" he's turned the power off, and proceeds to get electrocuted because you are dumping power back into the grid.

You can use them if you turn off your main breaker, remove your electric meter, or use a proper transfer switch. Anything else could kill the underpaid and working in shitty weather lineman.

Replying to myself..

Also, you can trip a breaker and/or burn your house down if you pull more than the current rated for the leg of the circuit you backfeed into.

>>
>>1101807
Oh, so they'd want to power their entire house circuitry instead of plugging individual devices into the generator. I can see the "convenience" there, but that caveat does sound dangerous as fuck.

So I'm guessing stores/hospitals/etc. that use a generator to keep (mostly) everything running during blackouts have such a switch that prevents that power from running out into the grid? Since it wouldn't be practical for them to power only specific devices.
>>
>>1102033
Yes, they've got dedicated hookups, and safety devices fitted to not kill the poor bastard linemen.
Honestly, a dedicated hookup isn't even that hard to install, the average person could probably do it themselves.

This bad boy of a rasp is hands down one of my favourite tools in my toolbag.
Having gone through countless numbers of brands only to find the handles fall off and the teeth to get gunked up with shavings becoming useless.

I finnaly decided to try out a shinto Japapanese rasp and havent looked back since.
The handle is secured with a brass clip mechanisim and only comes off when you want to, and shavings no longer get clogged up in the teeth. Without a dobut Them Japs sure know how to make a quality tool and I would recomend getting one if you havent already!

That's it. I'm sick of all this "Masterwork Straight Edge knife" bullshit that's going on in the d20 system right now. Serrated-edge knives deserve much better than that. Much, much better than that.

I should know what I'm talking about. I myself commissioned a genuine serrated-edge knife in Sharkland for 3,000 surfers (that's about $20,000) and have been practicing with it for almost 2 years now. I can even cut slabs of solid steel with my serrated-edge knife.

Shark smiths spend years working on a single knife and sharp each teeth up to a million times to produce the finest blades known to mankind.

Serrated-edge knives are thrice as sharp as straight-edge knives and thrice as hard for that matter too. Anything a straight-edge knife can cut through, a serrated-edge knife can cut through better. I'm pretty sure a serrated-edge knife could easily bisect a knight wearing full plate with a simple vertical slash.

Ever wonder why medieval Europe never bothered conquering Australia ? That's right, they were too scared to fight the disciplined Sharks and their serrated teeth of destruction. Even in World War II, Japanese soldiers targeted the sharks with the serrated-edge knife first because their killing power was feared and respected.

So what am I saying? Serrated-edge knives are simply the best sword that the world has ever seen, and thus, require better stats in the d20 system. Here is the stat block I propose for Serrated-edge knife:

(One-Handed Exotic Weapon)
1d12 Damage
19-20 x4 Crit
+2 to hit and damage
Counts as Masterwork

(Two-Handed Exotic Weapon)
2d10 Damage
17-20 x4 Crit
+5 to hit and damage
Counts as Masterwork

Now that seems a lot more representative of the cutting power of serrated-edge knives in real life, don't you think?

tl;dr = Serrated-edge knives need to do more damage in d20, see my new stat block.

>The downside of it is that your local electric lineman starts working on something, "thinks" he's turned the power off, and proceeds to get electrocuted because you are dumping power back into the grid.

Thats only true if your generator is on, which it wont be 99.9% of the time. When would a linesman be working on your home while the generator is running without you interacting? Without him hearing the fucking generator running?

You're saying hed be working somewhere upstream from your home on the grid? And they cant shut off your home individually? WTF??
>>
>>1105112
Transformers go both ways. Your little 3/4 hp genny will happily run through all the transformers it can find. That means stepping up to 15kv within a couple hundred feet of your home.

And no, you don't hear shit up there. Or you hear everything and tune it out. You could just be tuning your scooter for all I know.

Use a fucking generator switch it flip your breaker. It's not a big ask. Literally walking over and flipping a switch can mean you don't go to jail for manslaughter. Because Yes, a reasonable person, like an electrician, knows this needs a transfer switch.
